How to program your BMW remote key fobs to your car

Depends on the type of key you have......BTW if you do get a key off ebay it will never be able to start your car and therefore you will have a problem charging a key bought of ebay......however there s a way round this...if you have an electric toothbrush wihch charges via non metal contact....like the oral B ones I think..you can put the key fob next to it and it should charge....not tried it yet but from what I've seen you should charge it over night....can't say it 100% works or what type of Tooth brush charges is deffo required but if you fancy havinga bash give it a go.

the key is the one purchased with the car to the best of my knowledge and it successfully starts the car and opens everything etc. Just needs to be put into the lock. Am trying to get the remote features to work (boot pop and central locking). The key is also the old style circle key and not the new diamond shaped one. Will it still work with this key?

Hmm think migh have slightly different programming instructions......Dave Dnnlop did his one.....al he did was change the battery and it was ok....if not the it will have to be reprogrammed.....

Found this though which doe sgive another 2 reprogramming methods

X5, E46, E38 & E39 Diamond Shaped Key

To carry out this procedure you need to have one working key and one key which requires programming. Please read on if you do not have a working key as this is also covered further down. It may help sometimes to hold the key close to the rear view mirror as this is where the sensor is located in most models.

1. With both keys, get in the car and close all windows and doors.

2. Put working key into the ignition and turn to position 1 (the accessories should turn on)

3. Turn the key back to position 0 and take the key out of the ignition.

4. Using the working key, hold down the unlock button, press the BMW logo (lock button) 3 times, and release the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock.

5. With the new key, hold down the unlock button and press the BMW logo (lock button) 3 times and let go of the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock and you're done!!

Alternate Procedure:

1. Switch ignition on and off within 5 seconds, with all doors closed.

2. Take key out of ignition and press unlock button. Hold unlock button whilst pressing the lock button 3 times, all within 10 seconds.

3. Release unlock button.

4. The system recognises re-programming by locking and immediately unlocking the doors.

5. You have to do your other keys within 30 seconds after reprogramming your first key by following steps 2,3 & 4 only.

Alternate procedure if above doesn't work or if you do not have a working remote:

1. Turn key to position 1 five times very quickly

2. Remove key

3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button.

4. If you have another key do the same button pressing within 30 seconds

5. Turn on ignition to finalize

Older 3 Button Key (E36, E38, E39)

Remote Key Re-Initialise - If a key fails to operate remotely, it will have to be re-initialised (all keys in sequence at the same time)

1. Get in and close all doors

2. Turn the ignition on & off quickly (no more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds

3. First key - hold down button #2 (unlock - on the bottom left with the key blade pointing up) while striking button #1 (lock - the BMW logo) three times. Release button #2. This should be confirmed by door lock operation.

4. If you have more than 1 key then you need to repeat for the other keys within 30 seconds of first or they will be rendered inactive.

5. After last key then cycle the ignition on/off to finalise the process (it is not necessary to start the engine).

I lost one of my keys and got another off of ebay. Can I use this method to reprogram both keys??

So long as you have one working - Yes mate you can programme both keys you have to do the second one straight after the first...

Ok, so according to the above quotes buying a second hand key off ebay will and won't work with the car?

I need to sort a 2nd key out for a car I bought and was hoping to buy a second hand key off ebay, and a new blank, swap the inards over and reprogram the key to work in the car? Can anyone confirm whether this will or won't actually work, or am I facing a large bill at BMW for a new key?

unfortunately it will not work...unless you have some inards from a key that originally worked with the car.....in all fobs is a EWS transponder module which comes prep asigned to your car and will only allow you to start the car if present....which cannot be changed (it is possible if you can get EWS overide equipment from china but this will be expensive). SO you might have to get a new key from a dealer.....seems to be cheaper if you live outside London

looked onto this a while ago as my car only had 1 key when i bought it.

New keys are only available from the dealers.

Only 10 keys can ever be issued for each car.

My dealer told me he could get me a new key fully cut within 24 hours.

Cost....... about £120 !!!

Yep!! I agree with that its a easy way to make money... I bought a second key off ebay and a blank... reprogrammed the second key took the electronics and put it into the new fob which works fine but now i cant get it cut anywhere... Oh well you live and learn i guess... I got a similar quote from my dealer for a second key.

So you just bought a random 2nd hand BMW key off the bay and now that unlocks and locks your car? What are you going to do with it if the above comments are right and you can't run the car due to the immobiliser chip?

well technically they can still be used just not in the way we would all like to hope.....you should be able to get a key cut from an automotive key cutting specialist...

What are the limitations then? Is it just that the key will lock/unlock but won't start the engine?

Do you think if you took a key that "stopped working" (ebay one with a new cut and internals from a second hand fob) into BMW and made a good enough story they can reprogramme the chip rather than buying a new key from them at extorstionate rates?

yeah it would be limited to unlock and locking only.....you canot just get a blank and inards from a ebay second hand key to completely use on your car. The EWS module is specificaly coded for the car it was issued for, there is no way around it I'm afraid.

If you had an original key which stopped working cos a naffed battery then you could just try order a battery and replace it onto a new uncut key....which would have saved you a bit.

I would do what stringy says just get the a precut key with new inards and just don't pay for them to programe it.....£100 quid for a brand new key is going to be about what you'd pay for an uncut key, getting it cut and plus a second hand inards from an ebay key and it still woun't work properly.....

The ebay blank key fob with the electrics switched will only unlock the car/boot... handy ONLY if i managed to lose all of the original keys. I'm new to the E46 up until i joined the zone i had an 87 E30. I was at the stealers yesterday and asked if they would cut a blank key fob but they wont (no surprise really) I would agree with the above the only way to get a complete spare key is to order it and programme it yourself... I didn't even know enough to consider the EWS module which is ?

From an ignorant point of view all those keys on ebay are tempting but cliche, too good to be true...

Just a thought, if your having to response maybe the key your trying to programme is on the wrong frequency for the car? I remember having to buy one that was 4--mhz (cant remember the exact number) as opposed to 3--mhz...

ok, cheers Matt... i didn't have any frequencies on the back of mine, I had to take an educated guess after some research... the printing on the chip was the only confirmation i had.
