Scotty540
HI All, I've done a search but not found a complete answer to my question... My PDC isn't working, if you put the car in reverse you get a solid beeeeeeep, then it stops after a few seconds. I've heard if its a faulty sensor it should continue to solid beep for as long as the car is in reverse? I've got INPA but i've not had a chance to hook it up yet. Another question, are E39 Sensors the same as E46 sensors? We're breaking a 540i Sport and they look exactly the same but have different part numbers? Thanks, Scott
simonlpearce
It definitely sounds like a duff sensor, i think there is a way of telling by putting your ear up against it and listening for a noise or something...
Mikey
Yep, does sound like a dodgy sensor. If turn the key to ignition 2 and put the car in reverse and go to the rear bumper and listen to each sensor you should hear it click. The one that isn't clicking is duff. Not sure if E39 ones are the same.
Scotty540
They're physically the same, but as I say the part numbers are different, I suppose I could try one and see
Scotty540
Had a quick listen, the outer 2 are clicking but the inner 2 aren't, might chuck the E39 ones on quickly as they're here and see what happens!
beeRS
For the E46 I beleive there are two type of PDC, They changed in 2000/2001. There are as many part numbers as there are colour choices as they come pre-painted from BMW. It is not a good idea to paint or re-paint them yourself as they are very sensitive to the thickness of paint (so I'm told!) and that's why BMW sell them pre-painted. Each colour has a different part number, but are essentially the same thing. I used un-painted ones as replacements on my E46 as they are far cheaper from BMW. The part number on the box (post 2001 model) is 66206989067, however this part number is not mentioned on the PDC itself. The part numbere on the PDC is 6911831. This part number is also the one that appears on eBay the most frequently. Not sure if the E39 mone is the same as the E46, but if it looks the same and has the same plug its definately a good bet! kylel39
Hello Guys, Just wondering what the exact part number is for a 51 plate (2002) 318 coupe if anyone knew? I have one duff parking sensor and need to replace it. Or if anyone knows if this would suit; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-PARKING-SENSORS-PDC-CHEAPEST-EBAY-/260898714102?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cbec671f6#ht_500wt_1413 Cheers guys. Neil_S
It is worth noting that Land Rover Discovery 3 sensors are a direct fit replacement, certainly for my facelift 2004 330i sport anyway. £42 from the dealer which is up to 3 times cheaper than BMW will charge you. The Land Rover part number is YDB500301PMA for reference. I made a post on pistonheads with some photos which may help you identify if they will fit your car... http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=72&t=1076254&mid=
Rob-
^^ worthy of a sticky me thinks?
momo
Now THATS useful!! BMW are a rip off for these smaller parts.. I bet the price of these came down after BMW sold the company. Also - it's worth trying Bmminiparts - I got a full retro-fit kit (inc loom and all 4 sensors) for £120 from them.

Individual 330ci
I too bought the Land Rover Discovery 3 sensor for mine- Haven't fitted yet but need to as PDC has been failing intermittently for the past few weeks. Stephen James in Ruxley- My local dealer quoted £164 for ONE sensor, apparently that was a painted one and they could only supply a painted one??? Hmmmm BS me thinks!! In the end I got a Land Rover one and it was £42. As I say, I haven't fitted it yet but the guy in Land Rover said the sensor requires a bit of plactic in the sensor being cut to enable the BMW PDC connectors to fit in- Im not 100% on that but I'm quite happy to do that for a £120 saving! Individual 330ci
Shouldn't be that much for a painted one. Yeah needless to say I told them I'd leave it, I think that must be the RRP though as Cotswold BMW from here said £122 and that was with the discount. It would have been handy to have it already sprayed but I have some paint left from when I sprayed my spoiler so can easily spray it at home! The guys at my Land Rover dealer were very helpful and said they have people in all the time after the sensors for BMW's. I cant say I'm surprised at those prices! I should add, nothing modified here, it connected without issue and is untouched from the Land Rover dealer.

Good to know.... I can't comment for sure as I havent fitted it yet but according to google searches you do need to modify it for sport coupes and convertibles. There are 3 different Land Rover sensors and the e46 Saloon ones are different to the Coupe/Vert IIRC... Still either way its still a massive saving and im quite happy to cut a small bit of plastic off the connector IF it is required! . I will update this when done so we can see for defo! Individual 330ci
Hi people, I fitted my new Land Rover sensor today and I can confirm that the connectors are different for the CI Sport bumpers- However it was a piece of p**s to make it fit! These are the sensors side by side: BMW one on Right, LR one on Left.... As you can see the plastic moulded guiding pieces at the bottom are laid out differently but it is only the slot in the middle that stops it fitting- to get round this I just cut the bit sticking up on the connector from the PDC loom- you can just about make out below: It still clips in fine as the luggs on the connector are exactly the same so no issues there! Other than that they are exactly the same and the Land Rover one is £80 cheaper at £42! Pic below shows they're the same: So yeah it works perfectly and its lovely to have it all working as it should again!
Daz 330 Cs
Good job there, both sensors are probably made in the same factory anyway
cf_corp
does anyone have pdc's on their preface 4dr saloon SE? mine beep randomly when its wet out or the cars bumper is a bit dirty i think the dirt gets at the prefacelift pdc sensors and gives false readings cause they are so close to the road vs the facelift e46. all my sensors are good, and i have spares. Individual 330ci
Good job there, both sensors are probably made in the same factory anyway Yeah they are pretty much a universal sensor- loads of cars use them, its just the connectors that are different! Just the BMW tax has worked its way on to them if you buy from the stealers lol
Xup
So how hard is it to pop these out of a 2005 convertible rear bumper, my left centre one has packed in so needs replacing. Does the LR garage do all the BMW colours too? i.e. would I be able to get a sparking graphite one from there?
