pablo
one with a metal impellor I believe. No idea if this one is any good but seemed ok. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290681964907?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
CompDoc
If you are going to go for a cheaper one I'd recommend changing it every 60,000 miles, (my standard pump failed at 88K) and make sure you check for pully movement at each service. Also go for the plastic impeller versions just in case. When the pumps fail its usually the bearings and you dont want a metal impeller wobbling about inside you aluminium head making a new hole. GJN
Cheers guys. If I replace it again after 60,000 miles that'd be in 12 years time for me! If that's the case I'll not bother paying the extra for the BMW one.
Daz 330 Cs
For the price, i'd be buying the genuine one ALL day long, irrespective of how many miles you do. Is it really worth saving a few quid on something as utterly important as a water pump ?

Is it really worth saving a few quid on something as utterly important as a water pump ? I hear what you're saying, but then again, if the original BMW pump was any good, presumably people wouldn't be recommending I replace it (along with the radiator, thermostat and header tank) at 60k miles? If you assume that BMW are marking up their prices just for the name, then the KWP one looks a reasonable unit at £58.25 compared with £89.31 for the BMW one. Appreciate your comments. GJN
I've never heard of anyone recommending OEM replacement at 60k miles ? Something about plastic impellers failing, so replace as a precaution along with plastic header tank, thermostat and radiator.
JasonR
I got one from emfcycles on ebay seems ok so far and they come with a 2 year warranty Edited April 26, 2012 by JasonR
richie19
id stick with genuine, i bought a metal impeller one and wasn't impressed with the quality so i bought genuine and it was so much better. They are expensive but id rather pay the extra for a decent part.
Fishman68
My advice for what its worth....it's.false economy and bad practise to buying inferior parts. The biggest enemy to an engine is overheating. BMW upgraded the oem pumps once they were made aware that the plastic paddles disintegrated over time.....hence why the are now made if metal. My pump broke due to bearing failure at 110k. in real terms on critical parts why take a gamble to save 30 odd quid when it will cost you an engine in the long term. Go BMW parts...I only say this because it's through experience. Edited April 27, 2012 by Fishman68
GJN
OK guys, BMW it is. But then where do you stop? No point having a new pump if the belt snaps, or the pulley (or any pulley in the system) breaks...
sprintman
Stewart make the best water pump but it isn't cheap. Less parasitic drag and better construction bearings than OEM

No point having a new pump if the belt snaps, or the pulley (or any pulley in the system) breaks... Thats up to you! In my case you don't stop! I might have paid £120 for mine but that was a drop in the ocean that was a £2k belt drive refresh! I ended up having to change EVERYTHING because a "specialist" destroyed the system replacing the fan belt.. I think I still need to replace my power steering pump too! If nothing else needs changing (belt drive wise) on yours then replace the pump and the belts and leave it at that.. Replace the other bits as/when needed. Matt_S
Put the water pump in the PAS system maybe?
Matt_S
FWIW, Ive never had any issues with OEM parts and Ill more than likely be fitting one from ECP. As long as it has a metal impellar and is to OEM spec.
GJN
Thanks guys - If the thermostat packs up, will it do any damage? Do they usually stick open or closed? My engine warms up quickly and the needle stays put in the middle - is it worth replacing or not? Cheers.
pablo
they stick open so you run ok in traffic but too cool on a motorway run. after a few mins it should be in the middle and stay there.
