Jasesapphy
Hi Guys This weekend I have done some testing on air charge temps, and was quite suprised just how high they are getting on the 330d, actually i am going start looking for an intercooler upgrade (hopefully less than the £450 option from Allard) The car is ok when driving normally but soon as you start opening up and pushing on some of themp are climbing very high. It should be a consideration for you all.
autosri
Meth/water injection maybe
Jasesapphy
Bigger intercooler i reckon best option for ease, could use meth/water, we did this on old track car A decent intercooler will significantly reduce temps, the 330d ones arnt very big TBH
autosri
What sort of temps are you getting then out of interest
Jasesapphy
Going to get some more peak readings but 98oC was seen the weekend, which is bloody high
autosri
Wow that's pretty warm you must be able to gain some power by dropping that down
L333JSA
98degrees is nuts. Where were you recording this from out of interest? I've got a fairly sizeable intercooler to go on next.
james@ M Developments
Crazy isn't it, you can literally touch the outlet side if the std cooler and think my god! How hot! That's why the cooler I developed had to be very efficient and make the most of the space we had to play with
Jasesapphy
James does it fit with the fan there? Allard one replaces big fan with 2 small ones
james@ M Developments
I'm sure the same could be done with ours, just use two smaller slimline fans, I need a car to try as mine didn't have them fitted Edited December 11, 2012 by james@msd
dannyboy759
Was the temp taken from the alloy part of the charge cooler hoses where the OEM temp sensor sits? This would be open to heat soak from the rest of the engine and doesnt give an accurate reading!
L333JSA
Let's be honest here........BMW wouldn't of put an air temperature sensor in a charge pipe that was going to read inaccurately now are they!? All the charge system will suffer from heat soak but that's only when you're sat in traffic, However a good intercooler will soon get these temps down as you start moving again,

dannyboy759
Looks pretty good What was that off off? And whats your thoughts on increasing the lag with the larger cooler?
L333JSA
It was originally an Airtec 70mm RS500 Cosworth Intercooler that I had modified - basically the top chopped off it and smaller inlet/outlets welded on. No extra 'lag' at all - bear in mind all you are doing is just compressing the air that's already in there.

Oh right a custom job then?! nice If you increase the "space" or size of a charge cooler you do run the risk of lag due to the cooler cooling the air arfter the turbocharger has compressed it. It can also be a problem if you move the cooler for any reason and extend the piping to and from it, getting more surface area is always a good thing but it will increase lag, just depends on how much and if its noticable or not! Jay Cartay
Sorry to drag this up but was the airtec cooler fitted with a fan/fans in the end?
L333JSA
Without.
Jay Cartay
Any repercussions of doing that? Did Jasesapphy have to fit his without?
L333JSA
Non whatsoever that I have found anyway. My intercooler is different to Jasesapphy's
Jay Cartay
I'm worried that the fan is there for a reason and that removing it must be bad lol.
L333JSA
The only thing its going to possibly going to affect is the aircon when stationary I believe. Mine's been off for 4 months ish and I know of someone elses thats been off for over a year with no adverse affects.
Jay Cartay
Ah. I do like to use my aircon. Hmm..... More thought required....
