Convert Halogen Headlights To Projector/xenon Headlights

Recommended Posts

Whats needed other then the projector/xenon headlights to convert a halogen headlight coupe to be xenon headlighted.

Is all the existing wiring/plugs for the halogens good for the projector/xenons?

Existing bulbs match and work with projector/xenons?

LCM ok to run the projector/xenons?

Thanks in advance

Not overly fussed about OEM items tbh, have seen some angle eye units which Im considering for a fresher look but not sure yet.

Where did you get the Depos from?? No Angel eyes in Depos?

I use the depo units with aftermarket HID units, people talk about canBus stuff but its all bulls**te all you need is a resistor to stop the the warning light on the dash coming on.

FYI you can also disable the checks for most, if not all, of the bulbs on the car anyway using ncsexpert, saves adding resistors.

There are a couple of M3 sets complete currently listed with a BIN of £280 - http://www.ebay.co.u...=item337edf1e67 and I did spot one guy selling a damaged pair for a coupe that could be rebuilt using your original lights http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1423.l2649

I've just finished this conversion using an old smashed pair of pre-facelift oem xenons and converting it all into my facelift lights, total cost was around £85 complete with ballasts and Phillips D2S bulbs

Next step is some 3" clear bi xenon projector units from the overseas and maybe convert the highbeam to projector.

A good source of info for converting to projectors http://www.theretrofitsource.com/

Don't forget to do the conversion properly you also need auto levelling and headlight washers, either that or to fit standard halogen bulbs at MOT time

Yes mate, and it should work out much cheaper than paying £400+ for a decent set.

What are your current lights like? are they similiar to the linked M3 ones or are they the one piece facelift versions?? Let me know and I'll keep my eyes open as I'm always trawling ebay

Hi Blair,

Those Depo ones look awesome, the ones I've been seeing (not FK/Depo) look stupidly tacky so I've avoided those like the plague. On yours, can you change the angel eyes? I hate the big thick rings and would like to get a set and then change them over to the thinner CCFL's. Is that possible?

Thanks.

Has anybody done the OEM conversion??

Not fussed on levelers or automatic etc.

Can the non xenon LCM be used?

Can I fit HIDs to them, if so what bulbs do I need.

Thanks

Hi Toby,

I've just stripped my lights again and done photo's showing the internals to give you an idea as to how easy it is, do you want me to PM them to you or post them up on this thread?

I've just connected up the oem xenon projector light fitted with a canbus hid error cancel kit (cheap as chips on ebay) and no error on the dash so no you don't need to change the LCm for an xenon one.

Light on for the test before fitting..

Door open but no lights out.. ignore the emmisions light.. EGR delete isn't liked by the EU4 engine

Hey, nice one. Post them up in here, benefits others that might want to do this too.

Thanks very much.

Oooooo, the OEM item works with a canceller. Awesome. That's opened up some options.

Thanks :-D

Sorry for the delay Toby, had a few pc problems!

Tools required are a flat blade & phillips screwdriver plus a 5 mm allen key to strip the lights

Complete light unit before deconstruction..

IMAG2871.jpg

Next remove the rubber seal, glass outcover and internal trim piece, they all just clip on.

IMAG2874.jpg

Leaves you with the exposed internals..

IMAG2875.jpg

Next you need to remove the rear light fittings/rubber protection boots etc..

IMAG2876.jpg

I've left the ballast still attached but to remove this it's two phillips screws and slides out backwards

IMAG2877.jpg

Next you need to wind both adjusters clockwise with the 5mm allen key to give a bit of room to disconnect the electric adjust motor from behind the light bowls

IMAG2878.jpg

Using a flat blade screwdriver reach through the back and open up the plastic bracket to release the ball end connector on the electric motor (most tricky part of whole process)..

IMAG2895.jpg

Released connector..

IMAG2894.jpg

Wind the two adjusters all the way out using the 5mm allen key to release the top mounts..

IMAG2880.jpg

IMAG2891.jpg

Outer adjuster will get really loose

IMAG2892.jpg

The light bowl will now slide out f the casing and you have a stripped headlight ready for rebuilding with your new projectors (ignore that these are already projectors, the principle is the same)

IMAG2885.jpg

Back of light unit..

IMAG2886.jpg

Rebuilding is the famous old saying in good old haynes fashion "Refitting is the reversal of removal" apart from when reconnecting the electric adjuster you need to give the front a push to relocate the ball joint.

IMAG2893.jpg

And finally fitted

IMAG2903.jpg

Mine will be changing again soon as I've just ordered some brand new light covers and some 3" bixenon projector units

E55bixenonprojector.jpg

I should really start a thread on my tourer with all my little projects LOL

Hope the above helps

Charlie

Thats awesome. Thanks for the guide.

Im still looking for either a decent set of projectors to swap straight in or a damaged set to build into my units.

Can a set of projectors from an e39 (I think) 5Series headlight be used to swap the projector bits into my e46 light units???
