R11CH: Supercharged E46 Build.

Recommended Posts

Brakes all finally finished, car back on its wheels and a good clean.

Next up will be the M52 manifolds and downpipes attached to a custom center section to improve exhaust flow and fit a innovate wideband with dual bosch sensors.

Vanos overhaul as its never been done along with another new cam cover gasket set.

CCV valve which i will use custom pipework as apposed to the brittle plastic pipe.

Remove and clean intake manifold and replace any vacuum pipes etc. Delete idle control valve and fit new injectors.

Fit the supercharger and Aem water methanol kit and go get it mapped 😁 that's the plan and i can't wait.

What a great thread and a real inspiration too - thanks Rich.

Those brakes look great - did you renew all the internal parts of the calipers?

Thank you.

They are all new remanufactured calipers so its all been replaced, i just sprayed the lot to keep it looking nice for a few years to come.

I'm going to start my own thread in the next few days but a supercharger is on my list, I'm just going to have a chat with John Cockburn at JC Racing to get his view on running this with an auto box.  My feeling is should be fine, as there's people running this set up with 30k plus miles.  But my brother had his M3 diff sorted by John and reckons he'll know for sure!

I was going to do the Porsche BBK upgrade but looking in to it further the bias isn't right.  Mid-winter, driving hard on fast roads, and in the pouring rain I wasn't impressed with the pedal travel, and with about 100 more HP I'd like better brakes.  I've got an OE set of fronts and rears I bought for £50 to recondition so I could keep my car on the road.

Will be interested in hearing what you think of your new set-up.

Auto boxes are renowned from for having problems on stock power so you might run in to problems with that.

Got out in the car for a nice evening blast during the week, car was faultless and loves the abuse it gets. Brakes feel good but yet to properly bed them in and go for a proper back road test.

Spoke to John Cockburn at JC Racing inThirsk - and he said I might have a problem on 'blisteringly hot days'.

I explained that I live in Scotland...!!

He did recommend an LSD, a Gripper actually.  But basically didn't see a problem.

Reading through various threads while on holiday it seems that are a few SC'd Autos out there - one on eBay right now, an ACS one.

Likely I will go ESS twin screw and will probably get John to fit this and my LSD at the same time.

GREAT photos Rich - takes me back to my  early childhood and growing up in Sussex.  Beachy Head!!

So things have moved on a little, car is now off the road having all the necessary work done ready for bolting the charger on.

Exhaust off and subframe out, relatively easy job that took about 3 hours. Worst part was lowering all the subframe on your own.

20181005-201723.jpg

Next up was to strip it all down and get the parts to be powdercoated off to them and a few parts vapour blasted.

20181006-145053.jpg

Cleaned the diff up and got the fuel tank out ready for the reinforcement plates to go in. Tank was a mare but got there in the end.

All new Oem bmw bushes and bolts ready to go on when the parts are back from the coaters.

20180901-123729.jpg

Threads all cleaned out and new bolts fitted ready to go on

Parts back from being powdercoated

Hat's off to you. First class job! It reminds me that I need to do mine!

Have you added up all the costs for the rear end rebuild? Minus the reinforcement plates.

Thanks.

Nope and i don't plan to as its alot 😂 more then i originally planned thats for sure as the "while its apart" came in to it.

Reinforcement plates are only £55 and my fabricator welded it all for free. Powdercoating was £144.

New bearings and hubs pressed in and cables routed with new clips

20181121-182613.jpg

Antiroll bar made up and all new bolts for the exhuast hanger and center brace

20181121-182702.jpg

Decided to go with powerflex diff bushes as i may end up putting more power through this lot later down the line so best to do ot now while i can. Just waiting on the tool to push the bmw subframe bushes home.

Yes, I know all the bushes will add up to a small fortune!

Still, gives great piece of mind. Did you replace springs and shocks, too?

Oh yes! Im now on first name terms with my parts manager and i receive 10% off every part as i have been a good customer for many years now, dread to think what it would have all cost paying full price.

I did all the suspension a couple years ago now with Bilstein and Eibach parts. All on here a few pages back.

Epic Rich - did you buy the BMW bearing/bushes puller kit?

I've heard of folk leaving the old bushes in for powder-coating and then swapping these out after for new, rather than removing and masking.  There's pros and cons I guess.

And are you going to coat the underside of the whole car, with everything out, with something, or is the OE finish under there OK?

Cheers man.

I have all the bush tools except the ones for the subframe, seems to a real lack of them in the uk.

Sod removing the bush after powdercoating. I had to burn my bushes out and cut the sleve out after as its just such a pain getting anything to fit the little lips on the bush and subframe.

I borrowed a big puller set to fit my bushes and then speaking to my bmw parts manager he would have lent me the tool they have 😂 should have asked first i suppose.

Yes il be coating the underside as a bit of rust was found when the tank was dropped and also to coat the reinforcement plates, rest is it still good from when i coated it all before.

Wow it was a long time ago i updated this!

So a lot has happened, finished the underside restoration, fitted the supercharger, in the process of mapping on the dyno and BANG no 6 piston ended up with a nice hole!

So....B30 engine conversion, ZF gearbox, 328 propshaft, clutches etc etc and we have a working car again 😂

Car is making around 350bhp without the water meth injection turned on so more power is definitely to be had when it goes on the dyno for vanos tuning and meth.

Car feels properly fast, keeps you pushed back in the seat to the redline and the pops and bangs this thing makes puts a big smile on your face 😁

I shall let the pictures do the talking 😉

I was disappointed when you stopped updating this thread but you've redeemed yourself. Great work!

Feel free to post pics of the Lancer Evo too  :worthless:

Thanks. Plenty more over on my Instagram page R11CH46.

Not my Evo unfortunately but the guy who does the geometry. Has some very nice track focused E46 M3's next door as well but didn't get a picture 🤦‍♂️
