You'll have scratched it all off having seen some of your cleaning antics! :P

Not much to report here, but the car has earned itself a stay of execution! I did have an i3 on order, and was a couple of weeks from collection, but the lease firm started messing around with prices etc., and I managed to get out of the contract.

I've since started looking for property, and I'm hoping to reserve something off plan in the next couple of days/weeks, if all goes well. As such, the 330d lives! (But not without its problems.)

The flywheel is dead, as is the diff bush, and the rust is getting a bit worse. The flywheel I'll leave, as it's £££, and I can drive around it. The diff bush, while a pain to replace, does appear to be bodgable with urethane in a tube (like mastic). It's a massive bodge, but if it stops my clunking, I'm happy! The rust I'll try to sort out myself with a wire wheel and some spray cans. Might look terrible, but I can cross that bridge when I get there! It's not helped by having used the car as a test for arch rolling a friend's mk1 Scirocco. Thinking that the car was going to be broken very soon, no care was taken. As a result, the paint on the passenger side took a bit of a beating. On the plus side, there is much more clearance now! Which would be great, if I hadn't sold my HSDs, again, thinking I was going to break the car... I'll be on the look out for another set soon though! @Mr Xen - if you get fed up of being one of the cool kids, let me know!

Anyway, that's the summary of where it is now. If I get time, I'll add some pictures of it on my summer's trip across Europe and into Russia and home via Scandinavia.

Sounds like 2 jobs and the car will be fine for a while!

If you're not bothered with how it looks that rust will be treatable for now. Keep it, enjoy it! Run the f*cker into the ground! lol. That's what i'm doing..

Or get somebody to crash into and have it written off.

That'd work too!

Guaranteed value on the e30, you crashed the e30 in the 330 moving them about. The e30 will crumple  due to rust (sorry) and the 330 won't be worth repairing.

then enjoy hiked premiums for years to come!

I think once I get me another 40k miles on mine (hopefully!) I'll happily oblige the crashing part - assuming your's is still around by then !

Depends how long that'll take you to cover :) at the average of 10k a year, I'll have done another 60-80k, and be into the 300k range!

On another forum, somebody is talkibg about a 330e on lease for £211 / month.

Indeed, I've looked at those.

Having that on lease kills what size mortgage I can get, so I'll get the house first, then I'm srsly interested in the 330e!

The end is nigh for my 330d! :( And other things aren't where I'd like them to be for a replacement to be organised. I was hoping to have moved into a place of my own by now, and be in a position to consider a lease. Sadly, the place I was trying to buy fell through after 6 months, so I'm back to square one. Market/brexit uncertainty makes me wary too.

Anyway, how does that affect the 330d? I'd been trying to limp it along, but now it's just got too bad to keep going, so a replacement is needed. Annoyingly, it's died with a full tank of fuel. It managed to 250,080 miles before dying, but now, it's just had it. It won't rev up (or start, usually), but when it does start, it runs like a total bag of crap. If I can get past 2,000 rpm, it's a good moment (until the smoke - oh my! The smoke!). So yeah, it's not worth fixing whatever the problem is - likely injectors, at least, on a car of such little value.

I removed the injectors with a half hearted view of testing them (since abandoned - the rest of the car is worn anyway) and found this in cylinder 5...

Not sure how it got there, but whatever.

Now the question of what cheap car to replace it with begins... Another e46 - a 325i, 330i or 330d, or something else like a SAAB 9-3 or a Volvo S40/V50/V70... Limited desire to spend money reduces options. If I get another e46, I can transfer my nice bits - like bi-xenons, rear blind, lumbar support etc., over. If I get something else, I can sell more of the e46 on to cover more of my costs.

The e46 is off the e30 lock up to be stripped for parts, before scrapping the shell.

R.I.P E46 :( sad times Joe :( guess I'll bring the sledge hammer along ;)

No need for a hammer. It'll be coming apart gently to maximise return on the salvage.

I thought I was finally free of groveling around in that barn!

It's got a full tank of fuel (I don't know why I was retarded enough to fill it up!) so if you want to come and siphon some of that, if there's any left when youre down next, feel free.

Bad news Joe. But you knew it was coming! Shame it's not summer and you can run the E30 for a bit. I always worry about some idiot sliding into my cars in winter, so worry like mad, get a £500 bag and run about in that for a while!

I'm with Xen, hammers at the ready! I'll donate £2 to the fund for 2 hits, get enough people and you'll be quids in!

There's an idea! I think I'd get a fair amount from my parents the amount of moaning theyve had to put up with as a result!

There's a lovely r56 MCs on auto trader that's caught my eye. I don't mind putting the house purchase back a month or two now that the house prices have stopped increasing. (although as things get worse and worse here, I'm fearing a housing crash gettibg more and more likely, and don't want to buy at the top of the market). Otherwise I'm thinking another e46 is most likely. They're so cheap now and a fairly good car still, especially for the price.

Fair play for sticking with it and getting it this far mate! I had an identical saloon and sold on at 170k to get a newer touring, idf your breaking the car... I dont suppose youd sell the headlights? Id collect as im not too far from Aylesbury :)

Yeah, it was a challenge to keep it going at times.

And yes, I will be selling the headlights assuming I don't get another e46 without xenons, in which case I'll keep them. I'll keep you in mind though. :)

Hunt down another E46 330d.

Good luck finding a rust free one though!

300k was my goal too. Oh well!

I'm off to see an imola red 330d manual sport tomorrow. I'm hoping it'll be OK. We'll see! I took my sister's r56 MINI for a drive earlier, and as much as I'd love an MCS, I just couldn't live with it day to day. No knee rest, hard to lay back and relax in, really aggressive self-centering steering too. Nothing else appeals for the £ like an e46.

A replacement has been sourced. :)

Facelift imola red 330d 204bhp saloon with HK, bi-xenons, leather (booo!) and a sunroof. Comes with style 216s, lows, a map, and chuckle inducing exhaust. I was a bit wary getting a modded car, but it's seemingly sound. All the mods are reversible with parts off my old one anyway, but apart from swapping the leather for my fabric seats, and selling on the 216s and going back to my 17s, I doubt I'll change it.
