M47 or N47 ... what would you do?

Recommended Posts

Well I might jumt the ship and sell my 330Ci in favour of a more family orientated E90 estate.

Now the problem is which 2L diesel to get? The N47 had the disastrous timing chain issue and DPF...but it's in a nice LCI model. The M47 has problematic swirl flaps, but easily and cheaply sorted with a blanking kit...but it's an older car and not as nice. 177bhp vs 163bhp is not an issue. I'm inclined to get the older M47 and no worries about clogging up the DPF and snapping the chain. What else to consider? ( I'm willing to spend about 7K - and it has to be an M Sport)

I'm currently looking at replacing mine with either a family owned 520d (M47) or a 330d as i'm very tempted to get what I really want...(I've discounted the 530d as they're dire on fuel).

From my research so far, I am categorically not going any where near an N47 engine and I would advise you do the same.

The cost to replace by a specialist and fix the likely damage is upwards of £2,500 and actually has a realistic chance of happening. I think you'll have potential DPF issues with any diesel car these days though.

PS i've got a £10k budget and am struggling to find decent ones!

I absolutely must have Black or white leather (No cream carpets)
Auto
330d or 520d
M Sport
3 Series must have screen/sat nav - 5 series has basic i drive as standard
less than 75k as im keeping it a while

Found the perfect 330d but the bloke isn't answering the phone

Having had alot of experence with both engines being an ex bmw Technician for 6 years I can say that both are very good engines but as you have explained both engines have there draw backs, swirl flaps on the m47 and chains on the n47 are owners biggest worries, although they are common you have to remeber that they do not effect every vehicle. As for the m47 the swirl flaps are and easy fix just be sure to replace the oil breather for a modified bmw part regularly to avoid oil leaks and turbo failure but over all the engine is bullet proof. The N47 is also a very good engine you cannot take it away from it but the chain issue will always be a worry, I fewl ita morw down to luck with the chains failing on these engines more than driving style but the do makw noise and give you plenty of warning before they do go and cause you a serious bill, personlay this wouldnt stop me buying an n47. As for the DPF from my experience the only issues with them is down to the car not beeing able to clear the dpf simply down to the car not being drive long enough for the dpf to be able to regenerate ( people who do low millage and short jernnys back and forth the shop nkw and again )

Not noe of the faws in theae engines would stop me buying one just be sure to maintain it well and it should look after you.

I picked up a 530d on the weekend so just the flaps to get removed for me :)

Highly recommend the 6 cylinder over the 4

not a bad shout.

My 530d Auto is averaging 30 around town (about 5 better than my 330ci) and 45 on motorway (about 10 better than my 330ci) FYI. Nothing i'll really notice on the wallet but the the fact you can drive it normally without it breaching 2000rpm is so much more relaxing than a 2,0 which will be revving a lot higher.

Thought you ruled out a 530d because fuel consumption was dire??

Correct. That pretty much sums me up to be honest.

Happy with my choice though as my friends all get sub 27 mpg in theirs obviously because they drive differently to me.
