Black Forest / German Alpine Road / Austria / Italy / Switzerland Road Trip - June 25th-July 2nd 2016

Recommended Posts

Right, time to start planning next year's road trip :D

As usual, i'll keep this thread upto date with plenty more info

Where we going?

Starting at the Black Forest in Todtnau and heading towards Feldberg and then onto Lindau (the start of the German Alpine Road), via the Rhine Falls Pass. Following the German Alpine Road all the way to Berchtesgaden, where we'll then start to head towards some of the more famous passes around Austria, Switzerland, and maybe northern Italy.

When?

September 2015

Which passes?

See posts below

Itinerary?

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

Day 4

Day 5

Day 6

Day 7

Day 8

Where can i stay?

Take a look here, hundreds of places to stay, to suit all budgets.

Getting to France?

You've 2 options, ferry or Eurotunnel. Eurotunnel fares are from around £20 each way (per car) and ferry can be even cheaper, but take 3 times as along. Eurotunnel are taking bookings now.

www.eurotunnel.com

Driving in France / Switzerland / Italy / Germany / Austria

Here is a list of things to take / be aware of when driving in abroad:

  • A GB sticker displayed on the back of your car, unless your vehicle has 'Europlates' that already display this information.
  • A warning triangle that you must place on the road in the event of a breakdown, to alert other drivers that you're there.
  • A high visibility jacket that you must put on before exiting the vehicle in the event of a breakdown or if you're pulled over by the police. Keep hi-vis jackets inside the passenger compartment of your vehicle, not the boot.
  • Headlamp converters, which will re-align your headlights so that they don't dazzle oncoming motorists when driving on the right.
  • From July 2012, motorists in France will be required to carry an NF-approved single-use breathalyser. Our Alcosense Single Use Breathalyser is fully NF-approved, and comes in a twin pack so you'll still be covered if you use one.
  • During the winter, snow chains must be fitted to your tyres when driving on snow-covered roads in compliance with the relevant road signs.
  • If you're travelling with children under 10, make sure you take along the correct child car seat for their age and size.
  • It's also recommended that you carry a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit to assist you in emergency situations, and a set of spare car bulbs in case you need to replace one.
  • In built-up areas in France, priority is given to vehicles coming from the right - known as "priorité a droite".
  • It's against the law to carry any radar detection equipment. If your sat nav has a speed camera detection function, you must switch it off.
  • You should use dipped headlights when driving in poor visibility during the day.
  • If you are stopped by the French police and handed a fine, you should always make sure you are given an official receipt.
  • Valid full (not provisional) driving licence
  • Driving licence paper counterpart - if you have a photocard licence
  • Vehicle registration document (V5c) - the original not a copy
  • Motor insurance certificate
  • Passport(s)
  • 112 is the European emergency call number you can dial anywhere in the European Union in case of accident, assault or in any other distress situation.

Tolls Roads

You can either pay as you go with credit card or Euros, or pay for a tag, which requires mounting in the windscreen. You'll then get billed the following month, and pay the toll bill via Direct Debit. See here for more details.

Will be interested in this mate. Got a mate, we both were talking about this event called fun ball rally. Here is the link.

http://funballrally.com/

But i would prefer to go with few more people(especially from this forum), if you organise this one you are talking about(i mean the one you are talking about above). Will prefer this.

So put my name and my mates car down for this.

I'd love to do something like this again, but I don't have the holiday leave left as I'm off to Mongolia in July for several weeks.

Enjoy though - some stunning parts of the world on that list.

Looking forward to the details. Is it ok if other people join. Might have a merc jeep and a vw jetta coming along. If its allowed. Also could you do a favour and say the costs rougly. Like fuel, tax and etc. Thanks bro.

Depends on MPG, and how you will be driving, tolls, eurotunnel, food, diesel / petrol, hotels, etc

I've not completely finished the route, but i don't think you'll see any change out of £2k. Obviously, if there are a few of you going, you can share rooms, and stuff.

Cheers mate. Looking at going in the m3, once I get it. Expect the petrol costs to be doible. But its worth it tho. Should have 3 people in the car. So can split it.

Is the petrol more expensive in the other countries compared to here and also. is it legal to take a petrol canister in the car.

Gonna go through the updates now. Thanks sive

Day 6 - (30th June)

Passo Falzarego -> Spluga Pass (~414 miles / 12 hours 20 mins)

A day of choices.  Not sure you could drive all 414 miles, but as you can see on the map, you can choose which passes to do depending on time / travel conditions / traffic.  If you did all 414 miles, you'd do the following passes: Jaufenpass, Timmelsjoch, Hahntennjoch, Silvrettastrasse, Bielerhohe Pass, Fluela Pass, Albula Pass, Julier Pass and Passo dello Spluga.

Day 7 - (1st July)

Spluga Pass -> Agnel Lake (~270 miles / 10 hours)

The final leg of driving (excluding driving home) see us finish at Agnel Lake, via the Colle del Nivolet and staying at the refuse at the lake. http://rifugiochivasso.altervista.org/dove-siamo.html. You might not recognise the name, but if you've seen The Italian job, then you've seen the Colle del Nivolet. It is road used for the final sequence, where bus hangs on the edge of the cliff.

However, before we finish the day there, there are still plenty more passes to drive.
