Even if it's possible, a small interference could cause major problems when the data transmission is interrupted.

You can use it with the phone apps to read codes, but if You plan to do coding, go for the cable.

This.

It would be possible with a modded BT obd dongle that then mirrors the bmw protocol, however I wouldn't have a clue on how to mod the dongle

Thats a bit of a bummer, so I just been looking on e-bay for a cable laptop-obd, there is quite a few different ones, I need 1 to cover my E92, E61 and would be good if it covered my E46, has anyone got any good links for 1?

Thanks

what's the year of all your models? pre-2002/2003, BMW scanner v1.4.0 is a good choice

pre-2008 choose INPA K+DCAN cable

If have enough budget, ICOM ISTA-D ISTA-P is the best choice

If you are lucky enough to configure Rheingold on cheap INPA K+DCAN cable, that will meet all your demands, basic diagnosis, ecu progrmaming, ecu update etc, 96 to current E46 all included, lol
