Ash's New F21 LCI 120d

Recommended Posts

I agree, much prefer the looks of the LCI model.

It is surprisingly nippy which is nice, and I've been getting around 50mpg too.
It's lovely and easy to drive, still fairly firm suspension (although still miles softer than the E30) steering feel isn't so bad, although again much lighter than the E30 but that's to be expected from a car 26 years younger.

I did take the E30 out the other day and it made me realise just how low and hard to drive it really was.

Hoping to get loads done on it over the winter though ready for next summer. Maybe even raise it up a little bit.

I really miss that straight six noise the E30 makes too!

So it's been a month since i picked up the car. I've done just over 1000 miles already, hence the reason for getting a diesel, and diesel being nice and cheap (£1.10ish here) is a bonus.

I've been down to Dorset (Poole) for the weekend and although it rained and there was traffic on the way down it was a relaxed and comfortable drive.

While there I found a couple of really nice roads to give it a good blast and the chassis seems to really come alive. Being a diesel with around just 170bhp I was pleasantly surprised at how nippy it was. In sport mode it does stiffen up a bit, nicer steering feel which was great for throwing it around some tight turns etc.

The road was so good I then went back and drove the road again just because...

All in I covered about 450 miles over the weekend and even with a fair amount of spirited driving I averaged 45mpg. Not bad.

Few pictures.

Got home a little early from work today so decided to give the car a pre-winter wash and detail.

Unfortunately it ended up becoming a bit to damp and chilly before i managed to fully finish so i will complete on my day off Friday.

I did mange to do the following:

Rinse

Wash, with warm soapy water.

Rinse

Iron X wheels and rinse

Clay

Rinse

Wash again including wheels, with warm soapy water

Dry

Polish

Hoover and clean interior and glass

Still need to wax it and seal the wheels, so ill give it a quick rinse and wash Friday before doing this.

Im no pro detailer by any means and this probably seems a bit OTT for a brand new car but I do really enjoying cleaning both cars. And i like to see it done properly.

I do plan to get a snow foam lance etc at some point too.

I use mostly Autoglym products, but some Megiures, some Auto Finesse, Some G3 and some others so I don't always stick to one brand.

Anyway a few pictures to follow

OCD with my cleaning stuff as well. All my cloths are organised by colour for different areas of the car (this is isn't even all of it)

G3 Clay Mitt, actually works rather well.

Autofinesse drying towel, best £12 spent on cleaning bits

Polish I use, I really like it

Got around to waxing this at the weekend, obviously have it another clean first then two coats of G6 wax. It started to rain lightly so I bought it into the garage to finish off

My GF has an E87 120i and i find everything really light, the brakes, the clutch, the steering. Is yours the same?

But the GF loves that and she has already decided she is chopping it in when the M2 is released and can pick one up at around a year old.

Mines an auto so I can't comment on the clutch, but to me the steering and brakes are just about right, They have a firm amount of weight to them but not as heavy as my E30. And if I put it in sport they firm up even more. including the suspension and better throttle response.

I really like the look of those M2's already thinking about one for in a few years when it times to swap this.

Ive now done almost 8000 miles in the car and it's been faultless.

I've been keeping her clean over winter but soon I'll have a go at a full detail ready for spring summer.

It did get a quick clean the other day for some photos though

No PCP, but I no longer needed a diesel and I really wanted  something with more power!

It does mean i'm paying a bit more than normal to cover the equity in my car but i got a 13% discount on a new 140i so all in all not too bad i don't think.

Plus you only live once!, enjoy it while i'm young!

Isn't the mk4 just awful?! I loathed mine! (gt tdi 150)

Will make the 140 seem even more amazing having come from one of those piles of depressing crap!

*hopes ash doesn't have some weird love for the mk4*

Yep GT TDI is what I've got here!

I had a MK4 1.6 as my second car and that wasn't so bad... This one however has done over 200k miles and has not been well looked after!

Still it only owes me the cost of the four budget cheap and cheerful ditch finder tyres I've had to replace so, just over £100 for a run about.... I can't complain to much.

But you're right, the 140 will feel even more special when it arrives!
