No control of the passenger side wing mirror

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, bought my first ever E46 330Ci a couple of days ago.

I have a problem with my passenger side wing mirror. I have absolutely no control of it when using the "joystick" (wing mirror controls).

Even when moving the switch I can only move the driver's side wing mirror.

In reverse the mirror dips as normal and goes back up again when put in P or D, but it does not go back to the original position.

The car is also equipped with electric folder mirrors which work normally.

I would appreciate any help in this matter as it's driving me crazy every time I reverse it doesn't go back to the original position.

Thank you in advance!

Hi. You can turn the tilt function off by sliding the mirror selector switch the other way so that when you reverse it won't tilt. I know that doesn't fix everything but at least you won't have the problem of it not returning to position.

Thank you for your reply mate. I read this on the web before posting on the forums, unfortunatley the mirror selector method does not stop the tilting. On either side it still tilts. Flicking the switch to the right or left and using the "joystick" only moves the the driver's side mirror

Try a different switch, that solved my issues with my mirrors.

Bought a used off Ebay, you will need to take your current one out to check how many connectors you have on the switch.

Just looked on ebay to see what their prices are like, not a single one in sight that has the electric folding button :(

My guess is I would have to go BMW correct? How much do they roughly cost from there?

Try a local scrap yard, there are also specialist BMW breakers on the internet.

This is just two of many, there are some in the London area as well, just do a Google search

Lucky haha. No luck finding the one with the auto fold button anywhere. Might have to go BMW direct :(

I had this on my 330 when I bought it, replaced the wing mirror. Don't buy a cheap crappy wing mirror from the likes of "wing mirror man" - it's plastic crap. When my local garage plugged in one of their mirrors it fried the switch so I had to get a new switch from bmw as well. If you need a new mirror Euro are good.

The switch will set u be about £50 iirc with forum discount from Cotswold BMW, however Iv tried that and as said it didn't work, the other thing I'd like to try is the mirror motor itself, there is a ribbon cable which can get damaged. As mine is electric heated memory with fold option as is yours?...the mirror motor alone is nearly £300 !!!!!!! I'm gunna try tomorrow and swap the drivers/passenger mirrors if they are interchangeable and see what happens... I'll keep you posted.

Iv looked for o replacement mirror with motor and ribbon cable but they are like rocking horse s**t !

Even though the motor seems good as it dips and moves normally when shuffling between the last owner's memory settings?

Any luck yet mate?

Mine are the same as yours I believe. Autofold with memory etc. So far I have reverted to using the memory seat button to get the bugger back to position when it gets stuck facing down in reverse.

No I will tackle this when I'm back home in September. Away with work in belfast at the moment.

Appreciate this was a while ago, but just wondering if any of you guys fixed this problem on your e46?

@mikesmith2 when you said switch, did you mean the switch on the drivers door to control the mirrors, or a switch somewhere else?
