E46 330CD Engine Temperature query / Thermostat help?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Something I've noticed with my 330CD is that in the mornings driving to work it can take a while to get up to temperature.

I know BMW handbook says anything between the lines is fine, but this is after approx 35 minutes / 20 miles of driving:

On longer drives I don't even notice it and the car sits bang on central most of the time.

Is this something I need to worry about or diagnose?

I will read into the 'secret dash menu' to find out temperatures etc.

Could this be a thermostat issue?

Cheers lads,

Tom

FWIW mine takes a good 5 miles before getting to the vertical position. Changing the 'stat didn't make the needle rise any quicker, or change where it sits when up to temperature. Using the hidden menu it struggled to get to 80deg on the old 'stat but now gets to 90deg over the same distance. I noted that the "quarter" mark on the guage equates to 60deg on the hidden menu.

HTH
Stuart.

5 Miles! Something is definitely up then - looks like a new thermostat it is then. I need to learn how to use this secret dash! I will take a temperature reading once I'm home.

Anyone know the best place to get hold of one?

Cheers!

Thanks guys, will do.

I'm suprised as I've been getting such good MPG. I guess in the winter months this would become a real pain.

Cars going in for the corrosion warranty soon anyway so I'll get that sorted first then sort the thermostat's!

Most likely to be your main thermostat stuck open. One of the first jobs I did myself on this car was to replace both thermostats. Didn't take a huge amount of time to be fair.

I used the Facet and Hella thermostats from Euro Car Parts rather than using the cheaper Circoli ones or indeed genuine BMW ones. Haven't had any more issues since.

Thanks mate, was just looking at them to get an idea of cost. Adds up to £78. Will see what the BMW ones cost and most likely go with them but thats good to know as a back up!

Same here - replaced mine when I replaced my water pump about a year after I got my car. Warms up in no time now! Stays bang on in the middle. Usually it's fully warm in 3-4miles. Add a mile or two when it's winter. ;)

You need to use the hidden menu. Mine sits bang in the middle from 77 degrees upwards. Mine was only hitting mid 60's. Changed the main stat first which nudged it up to high 70's. Changed the egr stat now it hits high 80's and maxes out at 92. I do still notice that the ambient outside temp has an effect. Over the coldest parts of winter it would still sit low 80's but when it's over 14 degrees outside its perfect. Since having the cool running issues I've become a bit obsessed with the engine temps and stick the hidden menu on as a matter of course for any decent length run.

Thanks mate. Will try and get to grips with using that hidden menu tonight. Can you do it while moving then or do you mean you check temps once you've stopped etc?

There's a write up on here but basically hold in your trip reset button. Turn ignition to position 2 or start it up. The display will change, press it repeatedly until it shows 19 on the display. Release it and the display changes, very quickly start pressing it again until it shows 7 and stop there . After a few seconds it'll show the engine temp. You can press again to cycle through engine revs, speed in kph and outside ambient temp.

Hi guys,

A quick bump to this as I figured out how to use the OBC functions at the weekend, suprisingly very easy indeed actually really helpful cheers!

I did 2 150 mile trips, outside temperature at least 19+ on both.

First one temp sat at 68-72 and the needle eventually looked almost upright.

Journey home was between 65-67 mostly. So clearly needs sorting!

Got the genuine ones on order and will ring some specialists local to try and get them fitted.

Cheers again,

Before ordering, I think there's a simple test you can do with the egr stat where you can blow through it and see if its open or not. Might be worth a search if it saves some £££

Fwiw, I've coded my needle to be upright only between 85-95c. It gets there in easily under 5 miles (a couple of minutes usually). (I hit 105c the other day though! :o)
