momo
Evening all.. Getting VERY annoyed with my car now! Just changed the whole rear suspension and RTABs.. It's only been a week and now i'm getting "5E20 Pressure Sensor 1" failure.. Looking online it seems as though it's part 34521164458.. Anyone know where to get them for the best price? Has anyone changed these before? Is it a ball ache to do? Been quoted £250 (inc part) to replace one from a local BMW specialist.. That seems crazy! Thanks Edited February 17, 2017 by momo
AndyC_67
Hi yes I have done this. Front one (I think that is sensor 1 but it's easy enough to check) ie the one nearest the headlights is easy....rear is harder to get to. Never seen them that expensive before. I was quoted about 100 plus vat from BMW. In the end I took a chance on a second had one from eBay. 18months on still perfect! Cost 15 quid! AndyC_67
Sorry just re read your post (doh!) I was just interested in the price of the part. Looks like the 250 is fitted. Took me about an 45min....and that was including tea!! Edited February 17, 2017 by AndyC_67 momo
momo
Yeah I can get a new one for £120 (on Amazon strangely). Might get it, and get my mechanic mate to fit while they do the brake fluid change. Seems VERY expensive for a sensor though.. Amazon also have one for £40 which is used and apparently in working order. Might send them a message. I've just spent £500 replacing all the suspension bits recently so this is a bill I didn't want! Grrrrrrrr..
momo
Also how do you know which one is sensor one? You said it's easy to check?
AndyC_67
If you have the scanning software (inpa) remove one plug at a time from the sensor. At some point it will throw 2 errors then you can see which one is which....ie when you remove the plug from the good sensor. Takes 2min. momo
Lol. I've killed my INPA/PA Soft after upgrading to Win10.. (Sigh).. I'll get my mate to use his SnapOn OBD scanning tool..
AndyC_67
Good luck. If you are anywhere near Brighton give me a shout if you need it scanning! No charge (obviously!!)
momo
Other end of the country mate! lol. Appreciate the offer though.. Did you have to drain/bleed the brake fluid when you did it btw?
AndyC_67
Yeah you do lose some fluid (can be minimised if you're quick on the change over!). No need to drain the fluid reservoir. Always best to bleed system after anyway. Oh make sure you put a rag under the sensor to stop getting fluid on you paintwork!! momo
Grrrr... Fair enough! It's due a fluid service anyway.. Might aswell get the fluid replaced and fit the sensor too! Did you replace both sensors or just the faulty one? A lot of people say if one failed the 2nd is likely to give up soon too - but at £120 each for new - doesn't seem worth replacing both?
AndyC_67
Yes you are right both is recommended.....but costly. I was short of cash at the time and took a chance with the second hand one. What could have been expensive was fixed for about 15 quid. If you have the cash and you are getting fluid changed its probably best to do both.....it's your call really. Regarding both going wrong close together...that's assuming they were both fitted together I guess.....
momo
Yeah mine are original.. Don't think they've been replaced in the life of the car! Wonderful! That's another £200 down the drain..
TriggerFish
Skim read... I got a Bosch one for £50 on Amazon a couple of years ago. Turns out I didn't need it in the end. The fault would show for a day or two, then go out for the rest of the year. I just never bothered to change it. Give it time, it may disappear! momo
momo
Not seen any Bosch ones advertised anywhere! Could I trouble you to find the part number from your Amazon history? Yeah it's only just appeared today. I hooked it up to Carly and cleared the fault, but it came back. Every time I turn the car off, then start it again after a few mins it does the usual pre-start check, the lights go out (all of them as usual) then after about 100yds or so the central triangle and handbrake lights come on in amber. It's going to take a few days to source all the parts so let's see how it goes. Brake fluid is already ordered.
TriggerFish
Sorry, I paid under £45 😃 Looks like it's gone up a bit since. £90 isn't too bad though. momo
How on earth did you find that? Lol Not seen anything from Bosch to say they do these sensors? @ £90 each, not sure it's worth it tbh.. £45 each then I probably would've bought them already! I've asked bmminiparts and cotswold for quotes - a recent (mid-2016) post on the cutters forum suggests cotswold want ~£95 each - for genuine BMW ones it's probably worth getting them instead.. TriggerFish
Perseverance I guess! No? That's interesting. I took it at face value, and assumed as it's on Amazon it should be genuine. Anyway, I've never needed it, so not the end of the world. I'd be surprised if Bosch didn't make them - I suspect it's a common mk60 part, which is shared over several manufacturers (vag, at least). For an extra few quid, I'd go genuine too. At half the price, maybe not!
momo
Apologies, poorly worded.. I meant how did you find that bosch part number would work on the E46? As I say I've not seen anything from Bosch (or anyone) to say that this is the equivalent replacement part. From what I've seen so far it's a choice of either genuine BMW, used, or cheap fake sensors that will probably last a week.. Lol Sure looks like it'd fit! Doing a search on that Bosch part number shows it'll fit a few manufacturers.
momo
Just noticed on the Bosch Amazon listing it says: OEM Part Number 8E0907597, 34511165467, 0025400917, 0035420518 None of them being the BMW part number for the E46. The one starting with 345111... is for the E38. So it's genuine BMW from BMMiniparts or Cotswolds, or used.. Boooo!! TriggerFish
So I've got a useless sensor? Sweet. At least there's £50 profit in selling it on! momo
momo
£45 profit over 3 years! Onto a winner there.. lol TriggerFish

momo
So left the car parked up over the weekend. Yesterday - no lights on the 20mins/10mile journey to work. Lights came back on half way home. Today - no lights on the way into work again. So it's intermittent.
momo
Lights came back on, on the way home from work on Tuesday and have been on every journey since. Start the car and no lights, then they come on after a few secs. No TRC or DSC (which is fun! lol). Something big might be coming up soon so holding off getting this sorted! It'll need to get fixed either way, but depending on that something else I might go for the genuine BMW sensors or I might settle for used!
