I recently bought an e46 Touring, and the rear glass screen opens fine, but is not held up on the springs. I've had a really good look at them and they look intact, no cracks or breaks as seems common, but they just don't work. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do. I've trawled the internet but not found anybody with the same problem. I did wonder if the springs needed more tension in them - the right hand one on mine possibly looks less compressed than the left - the nut on the end moves but really doesn't want to tight too much (and difficult to get much of a purchase without twisting other bits of the hinge so I don't want to give it too much welly - don't fancy a spring taking my head off).
