E46 320 D gearbox swap 5spd to 6spd

Recommended Posts

Just a thought in my head, is it possible to swap a 5 speed to  6 speed?

What is required, and is it worth it?

Missing the sixth gear as I used to drive a type-r [emoji57]

Driving a 2003 320D at the moment

I've just swapped mine from a 5 to a 6 as running a higher ratio final drive and wanted better cruising speeds.

You need gearbox, propshaft, mounts, and all the gearstick and brackets plus clutch and flywheel, inc flywheel bolts.

So it is doable then! Thanks for the reply!

Did it set you back a bit, or is it worth doing?

I think you mean a lower final drive ratio [emoji106]

Higher number, lower ratio [emoji106]

2.93:1 and I'm now at 3.23:1

I'd have thought that the cost would outweigh any fuel savings, unless you needed to do the clutch/flywheel anyway?

Lower revs and less noise however - they're always good things! You might find it cheaper to change just the diff, depending on if you're just looking to reduce cruising rpm, rather than any attachment to the number 6 itself :)
