Garage ripping me off?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Long story short I sold my previous e46 330ci and quickly regreted doing so. After a few months I bought another one in better condition than the previous one however it now needs a need fuel pump. The AA recovered my car and as I was nowhere near home, the car was dropped to a local garage(thats where they found out about the fuel pump not working).  I was shocked when they called me and told me that it would cost 580 pound to replace the fuel pump and that to do so the fuel tank would need to come out. From memory the fuel pump can be access from under the seat but I'm not sure.

I think something is not right with the price given to me, which i think is related to the "fuel tank needing to come out"of the car. Can some one confirm my suspicion?

The back seat only needs to be removed to access the fuel pump,i believe its a quick easy job to replace it

Bloke working on a house across the road from me told (today) that the fuel pump on his 12 year old Ford Transit needs replacing.

He had two quotes; one £1300 and the other £850. Why such a discrepancy?

Transit of that age has problems with the ecu and fuel pump etc. Lot more work involved with a diesel transit.

A 330ci is simply a pump change which depending on where the pump comes from is usually a few hundred and half hour to fit. Very easy job to do.

A bit of an update, after a few call the guy still insist that the fuel tank need to come out, I authorised the work as the car is not running and I need it by Monday for work commute. Monday is the pick up date I'll see what I can do. I saw a few videos on YouTube and it seam like a really easy job. Also they are changing just the fuel pump and not the sending unit, the guy wouldn't even quote me on that. The AA took me there I wonder if I can complain to them in some way.

Takes about an hour to replace fuel pump, I’ve done a fair few.

Don’t pay that ridiculous price............

They took you to the cleaners.

Pump was £156 from ECP for a friends e46 cab.

He followed a YouTube video to replace it took him like half an hour in the dark

mind you he has no mechanical experience either

Hi

Sorry for the late reply, unfortunaly as I agreed the price over the phone there was not much I could do. To make things worse the car malfunction a day later. This time the car was near a garage a trusted so I took it there and they found that the pump was fittet incorrectly. At the same time some other repairs needed to be done, such as oil breather system , cam sensor, o2 sensor etc.

I'll make another tread once a I have the chance to get the car a good clean.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I hope you got your money back?

If you fancy a laugh I've just had a garage quote me £900 for a back right caliper supplied and fitted, needless to say he got told where to go very quickly.

This guy at the garage was an utter fool - In his own words (which forced me to laugh in his face before he'd even looked at the car) "If i take the caliper off and can't get it back on" - Wait wha.......?! If you can't get the caliper back on? "Yeah we might not be able to get the caliper back on the car"

My only response to him was - Do you want to repeat that again and hand me a tea bag whilst you tell me this time? - Looked at me puzzled - Because you must think I'm a F*cking Mug. To which end about 3 people in the waiting room started to snigger.

I've never heard such rubbish in all my life, shame is they get away with doing this 7 days a week to unsuspecting people!

i called my indie and called him a  d*ck head when he told me it would be £156 for a battery on the vert! ECP had a 50% DISCOUNT CODE ON THE GO so cost me peanuts, i'm guessing they were going to charge me £60 to fit the f*cker!

the e46 engine's (most of them) it's cheaper to take them to a land rover specialist as it's the same Pissing engine (how bads that) I'm waiting for the mrs to either get bored of this vert of for the engine to pop as I've got a highly modified 2jz i wanna try and shoehorn into the bastard :)

Haha ive been done then Rasa as my indy charged £25!!  Same indy just charged £20 for fitting the fuel pump under the seat. Not worth getting my spanners out on a cold wet day for that money!  Reading this thread some garages really take the pi$$!!!! Name & shame em ....oh but i suppose we cant as its not politically correct to do so this day & bloody sad age we live in so these Wan%ers get away with it.

My mates missis had a "battery" looking symbol come on so nipped in to the local Household name garage who tested it & gleefully charged her £100 notes for a battery! When hubby came home & checked it.........yes he topped up the coolant!!!!!  Now maybe the battery was low but the "kid" didn't tell her owt about the coolant. Useless.

Generally nothing to do with PC - it's because while the review may well be independent, the garages will sue the forums for allowing negative comments about their business.

Yes it probably wouldn't stand up in court but would a forum owner really want to go to court for someone else's opinion? It's not worth it..

certainly,,and if when changing ourselves we snap a bolt or similar..its a proper pain in the arse..i always stay at the garage and watch and sometimes help.like i did other day as i pressed brake pedal after caliper fitted.otherwise hed of had one of his lads do it..one is his son and builds weird buggies/off roaders/camper vans etc..hes a whixzz with electrics also.
