Car been stood since Jan what are the crucial actions to get back on road?

Recommended Posts

Hi my car has been stood since jan as I needed to take the dash out to replace a leaking heater matrix. I'm hoping to tax and insure soon. Is there any crucial things to do for a car thats been sat for ages? The brake discs look like they're finished.

Off the top of my head:

- Check that the fuel is still good

- Change oil if it's coming up, or top up

- Brake fluid as it would attract water and never get up to temp

- Ensure coolant is topped up

- Charge battery, don't want to run a car with a near depleted battery.

- Check belts for tearing/perishing

Maybe change gearbox/diff/ATF oil if you feel it needs doing

I am in the same boat but three years!
I have given a full service and new battery, I checked all bushes and hoses and replaced any that were needed, for me I kept low on fuel so that's fine, brakes and tyres need throughly checking but am sure all will be fine after 6 months

It's only been since January.....Fire it up, it'll be fine! Brakes will look awful but will clean up really quick (within a few miles) although they might be stuck on and need some gentle persuasion. Tyre pressures will be low but rest will be good to go, for an initial start up and drive to see if any problems.
