330d auto box failure

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Signed up here as I've just purchased an e46 330d estate, unfortunately the auto box started slipping very badly on the way home and I had to get it recovered as it lost drive entirely. The car is getting towed to my house on Monday, is there any chance the box is salvageable or has anyone else experienced similar? Drive did eventually come back but only once the car had cooled down. I ordered replacement ATF and a filter kit, but that might be wishful thinking. At the moment I'm planning to drop the gearbox sump and check for any debris, and go from there.

Anyone know if the gearbox from a Z3 will fit? This is the GM gearbox 5l40e. I did look at the range rovers but they have a different final drive I think.

It sounds like the torque converter has had it rather than the gearbox its self.

I wonder if a second hand one that's known to work will be the best solution.

If you have an automatic gearbox specialist near you, ask them as not all garages are that clever with auto's.
