320d upgrading turbo and intercooler ever been done?

Recommended Posts

ive been doing some research into tuning the 320d 150bhp model. im shocked to see no-one has really fitted bigger turbo's or intercoolers. ive found one intercooler done as a diy and there are a few kit which are mega £$£$£$£.

here is the intercooler fitting link (one must say it looks the mutts nuts behind the m-sport bumper which is a future purchase)

http://www.unitedbimmer.com/forums/forced-...er-upgrade.html

so what im asking here is... has anyone known of any bigger turbo being fitted (what is the original spec, is it garrett/kkk?) or intercooler?

id really like some major whoosh power =)

p.s ive fitted a dtuk red tuning box, pipercross filter and a big service

There's one chap on the forum who's done just about everything you can to the 320d and he's running something like 200bhp. Do a forum search and see what you find ;)

I expect most people would just upgrade to a 330d if they wanted more power though; this is why there aren't many mods for the 316, 318 and 320 as well, because the obvious upgrade option is to get a car with a bigger engine!

Must be more than 200 surely, as a decent remap takes it up to 190 ish. But as Mit said theres not that many :)

thats what i was thinking chris, surely the 250 mark without new injectors and such could be possible with bigger turbo and intercooler?

Would have thought so, its a good engine so 250bhp with a decent intercooler and a larger turbo should be easy to achieve ;)

before i go wild i will upgrade brakes exhaust and suspension. id like to find this guy with the upgrades done.

my mates are ALL running 200sx turbos, one of them has a hideous 411bhp with a turbo the size of a dust bin lid, massive intercooler/injectors/ecu/chip/fuel pump. even though i know with my funds ill not get that kind of a hike but with my mates standard s13 id like to say BY BY NOW but watch him fill up with dinosaur juice after a good thrash. they always take the p1ss out of the diesel dog, id like to shut them up and understand that these diesels can be v-quick. they already respect my motor but not enough.

I was prepared to spend some big money on my 320d, mine was a 136 remapped to around 165/175, I spent hours on the phone to various tuners like AMD, DMS, CA Automotive etc, not one of them could or would be prepared to help out when it came to big mods like discussed above, I was going to go the big intercooler/turbo change route but gave up eventually after banging my head against the wall for so long, a real shame because I really liked my E46, and I especially liked the chassis even more after fitting the KW V3's, just needed more grunt :)

Why not just upgrade to a 330d and do the turbo/intercooler mods to that?

Latter models have 204bhp as standard and with a full live remap i've heard some getting close to 260bhp! So with a bigger turbo, intercooler, live remap may be you could be getting close to 300bhp?

Mine has approx 240bhp and approx 500NM torque (Not dyno'd yet - but Colin did the remap and thats his figures so I would think close enough for mine)

hi mark. After reading this post I realised that you have said that to me before (suspension) I've just been commenting on your sideways antics on YouTube. Hahaha small world. Yeah I think I'll be doing the turbo change and intercooler mods myself. I can't afford to throw a load of money at someone to do it for me (no offence intended). I'd feel hap hap happy doing it myself anyway ;) if it were not for some of my friends I would not tackle it but after seeing them do it I'll give it a pop. It's a bit different doing it blind compared to the 200sx as everything is tried and tested on there cars.

Im guessing he is in a similar position to most 320d owners who want to tune....

When I bought my 320d I wanted a 330d Sport, I could not quite afford one at the time, and I could not find a 320d Sport at the right money either, which meant I ended up with nicely specced 320d SE instead.

When it came to deciding whether to tune or buy a 330d a similar aged 330d was nearly still 40% higher in price again, bear in mind my car was 7 years old when I sold it, it made no sense to spend another 40% more to buy another car which was only an early 186bhp ?? version and still 7 years old, later 330's were still (and still are) fetching stupid money when you directly compared the value of a 320d.............especially when couple with low resale values of the 320d's now, in short it was worth more to me personally to potentially invest a couple of grand modding the engine rather than changing cars, as I was after all happy with the car except wanting more power, in short it was cheaper to mod than buy an 330d when you offset the relative values, not to mention higher tax bracket of the 330 :), If I had found a tuner who was serious about helping out with these mods I would probably still have my E46 now.

As it happend I eventually only changed the car because I found a deal on this E60 which I simply could not refuse !!! Its still worth more than I paid for it nearly 10 months ago (trade in value and not private which is even more)

Your not wrong mate, its a very small world indeed !!!

TBH I was more than willing to get my hands dirty and do some of the work myself, but I was wanting expert opinion and advice on which parts to purchase and for any help with parts I could not fabricate myself, thats where I failed, nobody seemed to know anything about heavily tuning any of these diesels let alone the lowly 320d's :)

I have still yet to find a tuner to tune my 530d beyond a remap, it seems like most tuners these days know nothing about mechanics and rely purely on computers to get power gains, sad really......

i know your not local to me on south coast but do a search for CR turbos in ashley/new milton (hampshire). they will litterally build a turbo for anything mate.

also reed perfomance down here will guide you through intercoolers/turbo swops and the like - they do everything and anything.

if you can get 260hp from a 1.9 PD vag diesel and BMW lump should be able to do same - thats with turbo, intercooler, injectors, etc and a map.

also ask about on www.vwdiesel.net - its a US/Canadian based site and people on there run all sorts of vag/german and american diesel. Nitrous would also be cool mod both to inject and cool intercooler. water/methanol injection. head porting gives big gains on diesels usually as well as the heads are normally a cack design.

however be cautious as you can end up with a diesel that does nothing below 3k with lag and then fires though to 6k or 7k in seconds.

i know guys in norway/sweeden with VW diesels that will pull 8k revs with custom pumps and nozzels - diesels will rev if you can supply fuel - and with a straight through pipe sound mad as turbo sucks up most of the normal exhaust noise you get with petrol cars.

(can you tell i love diesel)

Haha! Did a search and seems most people just dont bother with bigger turbos like they do on VAG stuff.

Iirc another member here did this. Hybrid turbo and fmic etc.. I think he just got it past 220bhp..

To me though it just seems a waste. The difference in running costs between the 320d and 330d is minimal yet the 330d is Waaaay faster! Stick with the 320d for economy. If you want pace and power then get a 330d..

Anything else to me is just a waste of time and money.

Ah ok, just thought Id see. Its one of those things that if youve already invested money into a good car it seems a waste selling it to buy another to start all over again. I think id be happy with a good remap...

I have a 320d and I’m pushing 245bhp so it is possible and that’s on a stock turbo, injectors.

How’d you manage that? I’m looking to hybrid turbo, decat and intercooler etc for that sort of power on my 320d
