¡Vamos a cerrar!
Hello . Could do with some advice . My 59 plate 116i drives great but at the end of a journey , especially when selecting reverse , the oil pressure light comes on ! Occasionally comes on randomly . No knocking from engine . I’d this likely to be a dodgy sensor or something more serious ?

The new BMW X5 is lighter and more efficient, plus it's now available as a two-wheel-drive model

Official pictures and details have been released of the all-new BMW X5, which is not only available with a four-cylinder diesel engine for the first time, but will also be offered with a new two-wheel-drive option. On sale in the UK from 16 November, the new X5 takes an evolutionary approach to design, borrowing its profile from the old car, and a few design details from the rest of the BMW range. The headlights, for instance, flow in to the grille just as they do on the 3 Series, while the Air Curtain either side of the front bumper and Air Breather vents behind the front wheels are borrowed from the 4 Series Coupe concept.

	Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a 330d. It is going to be a high miler. In all honesty, the miles of the the car itself isn't a big deal. I'm just unsure which variant to go for; the manual or auto?

I have heard that the manual is the better drivers's option, slightly better mpg, and is more robust, but not the smoothest. On the other hand, I've heard that the auto is smoother, but are aren't as strong, especially if you were to remap the vesicle,(which I may plan to do in future).

What sort of mpg are people getting from both variants?

I've had two manual 328ci's in the past, but just wondered if the nature of the diesel engine would be better suited to the auto transmission.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, such as maintenance costs for things like the gearboxes etc. With me looking for a high miler, I imagine, that some servicing of the gearbox would be required in the not to distant future.

recently my 318ci E46 with an N42 engine on an 04 plate actually a 2ltr as facelift model, started to hesitate on acceleration after looking at forums got worried as seemed to be a problem with a few engines and no fix.So i decided to take the BMW out of the equation and just deal with the physical symptoms.Which to me were electrical or air related as know a reasonable amount about cars. so checked all wires and connections there were no issues so on to the air system stripped the air filter put a new one in cleaned the air mass meter and as putting back noticed there was a small vacuum tube totally perished its a two part tube solid plastic in the middle flexible rubber at end not sure quiet what its for but sure something anyway changed it, rebuilt everything started engine and let it tick over for a while jumped in car and took it for a spin on a normal route where there is plenty of gearing down and accelerating and it went like a dream so in conclusion a list of what i did is below

	dismantled air intake

cleaned air mass meter ( blew it out with wd40 or crc in other coutries ) both sides of air mass and allowed it to dry

replaced the rubber end of vacuum tube

	new air filter

	rebuilt it all

24hrs with no problems so far

	regards coupe lover

I have been contacted by BMW UK who are trying to find an original E46 saloon (preferably M Sport) for some media work they are doing. A great opportunity to have your car featured in some official BMW media.

They'll need the car for approximately 1 week, commencing this Friday 27th March. Your car will be driven by a professional driver the whole time and BMW can provide an alternative car for the duration of the shoot.

Unfortunately I’m unable to go into more details than this. But, if you are interested and can give up your pride and joy for this opportunity, please PM me directly with a photo of your car and brief details (condition etc) as well as contact information. Feel free to post here as well.

To reiterate, they are looking for an OEM car.

Birthdays in the car industry are good. Rather than cut a dishevelled cake into measly slices before serving them on a greasy napkin, carmakers give us special editions to buy. And Alpina is no exception.

Everyone's favourite BMW tuner has hit the big five-zero, and it's marking the occasion with ‘Bi-Turbo Edition 50' versions of its B5 and B6. And they're the most powerful cars it's yet cranked out.

If you need bringing up to speed, the clues are in their names: the B5 is based on the 5-Series saloon and Touring, the B6 uses the 6-Series coupe as its starting point.

Both already come with Bi-Turbo variants, a retuned version of the BMW M5's 4.4-litre petrol V8 powering them. Alpina swaps BMW's pair of turbochargers for its own, though, as well as tweaking the cooling system and fitting lighter pistons. It also fits its own automatic gearbox and gives the cars a slightly calmer, though still fun character.

For the Edition 50, further spanners have been wielded. Tweaks for the induction and fuel systems have freed 60bhp and 52lb ft, taking the B5 and B6's totals to 592bhp and 590lb ft.

Despite neither car being light or small, that's enough for a 4.2-second 0-62mph time and a 204mph top speed, a 6mph improvement. Yep, Alpina even does away with BMW's spoilsport speed limiter.

from press release:

The arrival of the new BMW M4 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 9.1–8.7 l/100 km [31–32.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 213–203 g/km) sees BMW M GmbH making another alluring addition to its legendary high-performance sports car line-up. The new M4 Convertible replicates the performance figures of the new BMW M3 Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 8.8–8.3 l/100 km [32.1–34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 204–194 g/km) and the new BMW M4 Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 8.8–8.3 l/100 km [32.1–34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 204–194 g/km), but emphasises its stylish and distinctive appearance through its individual character and places the fascination of sporty and dynamic open-top driving at centre stage. The new model finds BMW M GmbH drawing inspiration from a long tradition: BMW’s high-performance sports car for track and road is entering its fifth generation in open-top form with this new chapter in its history headed “M4 Convertible”.

Future BMWs won’t chase efficiency with nine or more gears, but will get three-cylinder power, according to tech chief

BMW is convinced its current transmission policy of eight-speed automatics, seven-speed dual-clutches and six-speed manuals is the perfect combination, according to its small and midsize cars boss, Klaus Frolich.

Speaking to Auto Express at the launch of the new X4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe – both of which offer an eight-speed ‘Sport Auto’ paddleshifter option – Frolich expressed scepticism at the gearbox policies of rivals Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes and Cadillac, all of whom are working on transmissions offering nine or more forward speeds.

“We ran some tests” explained Frolich. “The [efficiency] difference between an automatic with six speeds and eight speeds is seven or eight per cent, which is a good result. But the benefit for nine speeds [instead of eight] is almost zero per cent. Plus, it adds weight, complexity and cost, and with turbocharged engines you have a good spread of torque, so [drivers] do not want to have the gearbox constantly changing its mind.”

Quizzed over the policy to equip BMW’s M Division cars with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (known as M-DCT), Frolich said: “Seven gears is not optimum, it is a compromise. As in a manual gearbox, in a twin-clutch you must arrange all the gears in a line, so for weight and packaging reasons we are limited to seven speeds. But our new turbo M cars have so much torque this is no problem. DCT remains right for M cars because we can’t make a torque-convertor that would be durable up to 8000rpm.”

Frolich also confirmed that for the foreseeable future, the manual transmission is safe at BMW, both in M Division cars and regular non-performance models. “Of course, with a manual you are slower, but it is more emotional; it now says ‘I am a serious driver, I am a connoisseur’. So, we will continue [to offer a manual] even if only ten per cent of customers want it. That is why we offer a manual M5 sedan in North America. It is stupid – the development costs are huge – but we will keep doing it as long as the customer wants it.”

BMW unconvinced by Audi prediction

Asked about the possibility of three-cylinder engines in larger cars like the 3 Series and 5 Series, Frolich was unconvinced by Audi CEO Rupert Stadler’s prediction that this will become the norm within ten years. That’s despite four-cylinder turbo engines having beginning to usurp thirsty six-cylinders in the large executive saloon and estate class, in Europe at least.

Frolich forecasted: “[small engines in the larger cars] will happen, but only when the buyers are ready. Many buyers don’t care how many cylinders are in their BMW, and the new MINI shows the potential for three-cylinder. But honestly, it is much easier for us to make three-cylinder engines work with front-wheel drive than rear-wheel drive.”

If you ever questioned the existence of German humour, allow us to introduce you to the BMW M5 30 Years Edition, which has a ‘limited' top speed of 199mph.

And the '30 Jahre M5' has several other exciting performance upgrades, which add an extra seam of hooliganism on top of the newly released M5 Competition Pack.

The engine, for one, has been given a special celebratory tweak. The boost pressure on M division's twin-turbo 4.4-litre direct injection V8's been turned up, and the ECU's been adjusted to cope, so it delivers 25 more bhp, boosting the total output to 592bhp. In other words, the most powerful production BMW ever built.

On the road, that translates to a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.9sec, that limited 199mph top speed, while still managing a not-terrible 28.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 231g/km.

As per protocol, it's strictly rear-wheel drive. Power's sent via a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, which has had a few light software upgrades to cope with the extra muscle. Which, if our maths is correct, gives the 1870kg 30 Jahre a power to weight ratio of 317bhp per tonne.

Underneath, you'll find the same stuff as you would under the M5 Competition Package, so 10mm lowering springs, 20-inch wheels with 265/40 front tyres and huge 295/40s in the back.

Elsewhere, the 30 Jahre has new steering and differential software, matt silver metallic bodywork, de-chromed accents, embossed seats, and 30 Jahre badges.

BMW's being a bit humourless about where it'll be unveiled though, but the upcoming M Festival at the Nurburgring next month seems likely.

Are you digging the fastest ever M5? Or would you prefer something a little older? Or just wait for the new M3, which we've just driven and you can read about on TopGear.com this Friday?
