Stage 1 - EGR Valve Cleaned

Recommended Posts

Thanks! B)

Yes it made a difference but mine wasn't badly clogged so it wasn't like a night/day difference.. I think if it was overly clogged then yes it should be much more noticeable.

I think I need to do mine again some time, just to keep on top of it! :)

Even though you are cleaning all this s**t from the EGR valve, you still have all the s**t building up in the intake manifold. So you need to give that a good clean too. Best thing is to take the inlet manifold off clean it through and then fit an EGR bypass so you don't need to clean it again. Also by fitting an EGR bypass you are reducing the air temp that goes throught the inlet manifold and improving combustion and therefore improving engine performance.

By fitting in EGR bypass you are not letting any exhaust gas into the inlet manifold which is very hot.

Another thing to keep in mind in replacing the crank shaft breather. As these are not on either Inspection 1 or 2, and should be changed around every 40k miles. The old ones are the horrible 'loo roll' style which are made from foam. Which block up and basically then starve the engine of oil, which therefore will result in lower engine performance, poor response from the throttle and can eventually lead to a melted engine as no oil is moving around to keep everything moving and not too hot!

The newer crank case breathers (fitted to the tuned up engines, usually facelift models) are made from plastic. These are a direct replacement for the old 'loo roll' style ones and only cost £27 from the dealer. Due to their design they will never block up.

Sorry to dig this thread up again, but like Andy Buck has said, “What is the little hole I should avoid getting cleaning fluid into?” Will carb cleaner work on this or is it too corrosive?

By the looks of this thread it seems to make sense to clean the inlet manifold as well (and while I’m there I’ll do the swirl flaps). I presume a good helping of carb cleaner and some trumpet cleaning tools will do the job.

Any advice or guidance on this would be very much appreciated.

Cheers!

Here's another request for more info on that "little hole"

Mines now done 105k so god only knows what Ill find.

As above I will also do the manifold and swirl flaps at the same time.

Is that you Jase man? ^

Ok, just cleaned out my crudded up EGR and the car runs much better. better pick up and no smoke on low gear heavy pull aways. Used 2 cans of Wynns EGR cleaner, 1 would never have been enough. All in, took me an hour and a half with a fair bit of time spent looking for a mislaid EGR bolt :)

The little hole is the one that the vacuum hose goes on (the thinnest pipe of the 3 by miles), if the cleaner got in there it would perish the diaphram, its pretty obvious so i just blocked it off before cleaning.

Recommended job if you havn't done it yet.

Also, wear gloves as the crap that comes out of it is a git to get off!

I attempted to clean out the EGR valve on my '01 320d today but after taking the clamp off the large pressure hose bottled it! The hose seemed very soft and "sticky" as if it was starting to brake down. I was concerned I'd damage/tear it by forcing it off. If someone could tell me if this is normal I'll attack it again tomorrow, if not I'll get hold of a new hose before hand.

I did my MAF and EGR on Sat just gone. My 330 is touching 40k - still very clean.

After cleaned the both and reset the throttle sensor - FICK ME does it fly even more smile.gif

Alot smoother throw the gears along with a quiter engine.

Hey mate,

How do you rest the throttle sensor? I will ve cleaning the egr valve and maf sensor at the weekend.
