Midas100
Hi, this thread has been really useful! The other day my car was running very lumpy and threatened to cut out on idle.....I cleaned the Maf sensor as I thought it may be that, however it wasn't. I then took all the pipes off around the maf and agr and there was a huge build up of crud! My mate has put it on his fault reader and it has come up with a fuel injection issue. Would this be linked to the build up of crud in the agr? He says he can run a test on the injectors to see if it is that.......I guess ill wait n see. In the meantime I have stopped driving it as it is spewing out black smoke. Any advice welcome, cheers bachu
stuu3270
Interesting reading... I have a symptom that I wonder if any of you have seen too. When driving along at say 30 in 3rd gear, not acceleraing, not engine braking but just feathering the throttle to maintain speed, my car kind of hesitates and judders. When i disconnect the vac hose to the EGR valve the problem goes away. I have replaced the hose, now the PC to the EGR. Problem still exists. Will cleaning the EGR help or does it sound like its shagged? (No engine light on unless I disconnect vac hose). Any thoughts?? Stu
bungers
Won't hurt to clean it. What sort of state is it in?
Midas100
Since my post I have had the egr valve cleaned, manifold swirl flapps blanked, 2 new fuel injectors and a new fuel rail pressure sensor!!!! basically I was done over by a mechanic claiming that he knew what the problem was and kept fitting things without asking me. When it came to the bill the cost was £1200 otherwise he wouldnt give my car back!!! my car is still broken, but I have paid and got it back. Somebody else has it now and they are still saying that its an injector fault.....................The injectors are a mission to take out though!! my car is still knackered and im pretty much out of cash. Im going to return to the original mechanic to try and get some money back as he claimed to have cleaned the egr and manifold, however its not the best!!! dtm
hi all changed oil filter and fuel filter and new oil last weekend then cleaned egr today it was caked up bad 122000 miles 2003 e46 320d new air filter, pollen filter and turbo filter whilst i was that far took a while to clean the egr but it came up good wish i took pics before and after but i didnt but the engine is spotless great tutorial here to work from much appreciated, never worked on engine before but very pleased with results today and no bolts leftover i have to say first drive in car since work done today was incredible what a difference the egr and new turbo filter has made a better sounding engine and better performance from turbo and car all round, very happy and proud of work done at home today many thanks to all for tutorials and tips cheers
Zonda_
Attempted this today, no matter what tool I tried I couldn't get access to the lower right bolt on the egr. I resolved to clean it in situ, I bought some egr cleaner from my local motor factors that said to spray it into the egr with the engine running a 2k rpm. It said to use short bursts and use half the can. I began to see results immediately as the crap was dissolved. After around 15 minutes of bursts and wiping it was all pretty clean. The reason I had done this was that my car smoked badly if it was left to idle for any length of time. I left it for a while to test it and as I pulled away I was met with an almighty cloud of blue s**t! I figured this would be the built up crud blasting clear so took it for a run and repeated the idle test, no smoke!

The_Judge_
hello all, has anyone tried using an egr bypass kit or blanked their erg off? cheers mick Yes we have there's quite a few threads, off the top of my head if you click on either my, Bungers or Jason Kuys profiles and follow our progress threads you'll see the fun we had. Jason went one stage further and totally removed the entire EGR pipework et al. Depending on the age of your engine you may get warnings on the dash, click on my profile have a look at my threads I started and you'll find the advice I received from other members, good luck. mickdale
worrying that the stainless bypass kit in the thread theres a link to didn't fit properly. Once the engine is stripped to replace and you find it doesn't fit must be panic stations.... theres a lot of talk of blanking - using a golf tee or screw you blank the small bore pipe. Theres also talk of using a 2pence piece - I assume this is for the larger pipe on the other side? cheers mick
The_Judge_
Follow Jason Kruys thread that I linked to above or this one: http://www.e46zone.com/forum/topic/52684-egr-blank-320d/ He blanked using £11 part from ebay and silicon bungs. My bypass kit was a bad fit, but there others which are better. Having fitted a kit I'm not perfectly happy, I will probably completely blank it in the future when I get round to it. MICK 330
My car has 189000 on it...90% motorway 75/80 ish. Would the EGR clog up more from short runs or do ya reckon mine that has never been looked at in at least 130,000 is gonna need some serious attention lol. It does smoke BADLY after say a contraflow 40/50mph section of 2 or 3 miles then boot it back to 70/80. RangeRovers just evaporate in a cloud....mind stops the pratts from tailgating !!! Ill check it out at the weekend. Great thread chaps THANKS!

StuBeeDoo
It does smoke BADLY after say a contraflow 40/50mph section of 2 or 3 miles then boot it back to 70/80. Mine smoked badly under similar circumstances as you describe. I cleaned the EGR and it made no difference. At the time the car had done less than 120k. I removed the EGR completely and blanked the hole in the exhaust manifold, and now the smoke is negligible. I've noticed, since doing it, that it takes a lot longer for new oil to blacken - so that's a bonus! Must be a result of having clean air into the combustion chamber all the time. MICK 330
As im lazy i went Zondas route. Nowt to lose! Squirted 2 tins of Wynns EGR cleaner down the intake today. Car feels smoother picks up better & seems quieter than before. See about the smoke issue tomorrow after the contraflow!!
StuBeeDoo
Thanks for the reminder, Mick. I bought a tin of EGR3 ages ago, I really ought to get 'round to using it. Je suis Charlie MICK 330
MICK 330
Well it doesnt smoke (after using the EGR cleaner) as bad at all. Maybe 20% (smoke is now "ground level" lol) of what i was seeing before. I do a 1000 miles a week so will see how long this lasts for!?
Stephenjamesraymond
Thanks for the excellent guide. Really helped. Found the process easy. I put a rag underneath the egr valve just encase i dropped one of the cap screws it wouldnt fall down into the engine. And also for the bottom right cap screw i also fed in the allen key socket on the end of the extension and then attached the ratchet after. If you kneel on the floor you can see what your doing. Worked well. My EGR valve was very bad, only one lady owner before me so maybe was never driven properly. Its on 90k Edited April 29, 2015 by Stephenjamesraymond 320Rob and The_Judge_
