CharlE46 Posted February 17, 2014 Report Share Posted February 17, 2014 Another key from another car will open & close your car using but not start it, as far as I'm aware the transponder can't be programmed for another car unless it's a fresh new blank. I'm way to impatient the most i managed was 5 and i was back out again! Basically if you turn the ignition again it restarts the process... sense why you have to do all keys at the same time! ChPoN3y_E46 Posted August 29, 2020 Report Share Posted August 29, 2020 Hey guys, i know this is an old thread but maybe someone can help me i recently bought an e46 and it came with 1 key. The key works perfectly fine to start the car but the fob buttons dont work at all. I changed the fob battery and followed these steps but no results. I see some people saying you need 1 functional key for programming to work, by that do you mean working key for ignition or working fob? bobdisk Posted August 30, 2020 Report Share Posted August 30, 2020 Do you have a diamond shaped key? All modern keys (E46 included) have 2 systems in them. One to start and one remote lock/unlock. There is a transponder chip that communicates with the security system when you put the key in and allows the car to start, this does not use the key's battery. The battery is used for the remote lock, if it is allowed to go flat, or is removed for more than 30secs (I think?) it will loose its settings, but it is possible to reprogram. Cant remember how at the moment, but will see if I can find, perhaps another member will come up with it. If you have a diamond shaped key, you must have broken it open to replace the battery. Yes sir i had to cut open the key and solder a new battery on to the board, used an oem replacement battery for the fob but as i said still no luck with fob buttons Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
