What Oil Do I Need For My E46...?

Recommended Posts

I always use "moblie 1 0-40" never really need to top it up either.

But BMW recommends Castrol

5W30 or 5W40 depending on whether the car is pre-facelift or not, I believe.

BMW used mobile 1 0-40 on my car when i had it serviced with them 2 years ago. They was advertising it all over the service department for there cars and still are.

My local BMW dealer used mobile 1 0-40 on my car when i had it serviced with them 2 years ago, probably because they got a good wholesale price on it at the time.

Corrected for you

My oil cap says BMW recommends Castrol. Never seen one that says BMW recommends Mobil

In reality it makes no difference as long as the oil conforms to BMW LL-04 grade (LL-01 for pre-facelift I think but can't remember), so the brand is pretty irrelevant.

But the oil cap still says BMW recommends Castrol!

Please excuse my ignorance, but I just topped my 330Ci (2005) up with 1l 5W 30 Castrol Edge after 10k miles (amber light came up after I turned the engine off). On my trip home after work I stopped at Halfords and thought I replace the 1 litre bottle I keep at home for when I need to top up. For some reason I bought a bottle of 0W 30 Castrol Edge instead of 5W 30. Can I still use it when I need to top up again or did I waste £19? I cannot find my receipt so returning it is not an option...

Thanks in advance!

You need fully synthetic 5w30 or 5w40 depending on the year of your car. That the bottle has Ford stickers on it is irrelevant as long as it's fully synthetic and of the right grade.

BMW recommends castrol but it wouldn't matter if you put Halfords or Tesco Value oil in there either, as long as it's the right grade for your car.

As per previous responses, it should be fine BUT...

If the bottle is unopened, you can still go back and swap it without a receipt.

as many off us have said 0-40 or 5 -30 oil, good brand castrol, mobil

The oil needs to meet LL01 or LL04. As an absolute minimum it must meet ACEA A3,B3. Forget brands and viscosities it just clouds the issue.
