Can Barely Hear My Sub... Sound Deadening?

Recommended Posts

FItted a cheap 12" sub in the boot of my 330 saloon so my dubstep sounds a little less pathetic but might as well have no bothered, can barely hear it when the boot is shut.

Is the noise deadening really that effective? When I have the boot open, it is notably bassy, to the point that it is uncomfortable to put your head too close!

The obvious course of action here would be to knock the ski panel out but want to know that will make enough difference or whether it is just a s**tty sub that I'll take back to the shop!

[on a side note, will a 10" sub fit in the ski hatch if I mount it on some MDF?]

amp & sub is 220watt RMS by the way, nothing remotely powerful but I've used the same amp in another car and it was decent enough for my needs.

The simple answer to your question is YES, the soundproofing is really that good. Your best bet is as you say to remove the ski hatch, failing that there are 2 sections on the underside of the parcel shelf that were made for the HK Subs, if you pop out the metal it should aid the sound getting into the cab a little bit more.

Sweet- very impressive sound deadening then! The occasional very low frequency vibrates my foot pedals slightly but the vast majority are completely filtered out.

Will look for the HK holes later thanks.

It's not really because of sound deadening, it's because the boot is airtight.

How do you remove the metal bits? same as ski hatch with spot welds?

Yeah exactly the same as the ski hatch, you might also find some more sound proofing underneath which can also come out. Ski hatch is going to be most effective but if like me you didnt fancy cutting the carpet on the back of your seat then HK Sub holes is the next best option.

Hiya

Yes, as mentioned, it's not sound deadening, it is that the boot is sealed from the Cabin. All your 'bass' is just contained within the boot and probably just serving to rattle your number plate and flex the bootlid!

You need to allow the bass to flow 'from' the boot 'into' the cabin. BMW's have always been like this, and in the mid 90's I'd pop the ski hatch out in my E30's to 'let the bass in' !

Here's a previous customer who did this 'properly' - by making an enclosure to meet up directly with the rear seats bulkhead, and a 'vent' matched to the ski hatch, the subs 'fire' straight through the ski hatch providing 100% transmission of the bass.

I've heard this car and it sounds absolutley fanastic. JL subwoofers will work in very small enclosures and they're also very 'musical', whilst this is a twin 10 inch box, you can still acheive fantastic results with a single 8 inch or 10 for instance.

The cutting of the HK sub holes will 'work' but transmission will be alot less than this method I've shown. Your enclosure and sub will be sitting in the boot, and only a small percentage of the bass will transfer via those small holes. That amount, might just be enough for you so perhaps give it a go, but I think you'd still be disappointed.

Cheers, Dennis!

i had big problems geting bass on on my saloon just took the ski pass out and put speaker cloth to cover hole and made the massive differance to sound... this way u never over power the sub due to keeping it on low level. just used a hammer and flat screwdriver to take the ski pass put

Just took out the welded in ski hatch. Cut the carpet, then using heat gun & hot glue folded the carpet over to cover the metal edges.

Re used the Velcro at the top (more hot glue) so the leather trim can go back as before.

Worked out really well. Looks fairly pro!

More to the point - I can now hear the sub!!

Should have done it ages ago.
