dannyb78
As the title... I just see in one of the Amazon adds above a K&N replacement air filter hence the question, I know on petrol engines performance air filters normally make a slight difference but unsure how well the 320d would/if atall benefit. Anybody with first hand experience?
simonlpearce
No first hand experience, but typically performance air filters are a waste of time, even on a petrol.
mit
The only thing it will do is stuff up your maf sensor when you oil it too much!
rickeh
I've got a BMC panel filter in my 320i (m54b22) and it made it a lot louder. Louder on the induction noise, louder exhaust. mpg same, bhp same, fun increased ;D
Mengwalton
Typically they make a louder induction noise and allow for more airflow through the filter as they are less restrictive BUT I have no idea on a diesel I was going to try one in my 330d but tbh I don't think it will make a slight bit off difference in a diesel as there is no throttle body like on a petrol. dannyb78
Some interesting views... not sure on the oil on the maf one though. Be interesting to know first hand experience with a diesel BMW though. In general its down to how good the factory design is in the first place, BMW do tend to put more time and effort into these areas than some manufactures though. momo
No.. Colin had one in his 330d and it was pointless..
Rich_D
I had a K&N on my last 330d, no idea if it gained any power as it was done with the remap The standard filter is huge though, so won't be much restriction Edited February 18, 2014 by Rich_D

rasa
no use what so ever, diesels run so cool com, pared to a petrol,
Rich_D
no use what so ever, diesels run so cool com, pared to a petrol, What has running temperature got to do with air filters? Also FYI, an E39 M5 runs cooler than an E46 330d, 78c thermostat in the M5 and 88c thermostat in the 330d, so you are also incorrect dannyb78, TOOM and Mengwalton
Ben-
Put one in my 320D last year but it did absolutely nothing. Waste of money.
JasonK
No performance benefit whatsoever. The only potential benefit is the fact that you can clean/re-use them and as such are a 'Lifetime' purchase. As others have said, though, the hassle you will get by putting a tad too much oil on and stuffing up your MAF is not worth it. Air filters aren't that expensive, and if you are looking to save a few pounds here and there on that kind of thing, perhaps a BMW is not the car to own! But back to the original point, EGT still has nothing to do with air filters?
rasa
thats why i said air filter will not be no use, coz the car runs so cool and dont need cooling no more,
dooge
Rasa, sorry mate, it still makes no sense to me either! I have a Pipercross filter, looks fancy, doesnt do anything more. rasa
Air filters don't alter how hot or cold a car runsmore air = cooler, i know the filter is there to (filter) but the air induction kits etc do let air through more freely
tqadam
Big power turbos have big intercoolers to cool the air going in the engine not 2 meter long air filters... Just saying

Feksake
Hi, NO dont bother. we know you love your BMW and want to buy it earings and things. But a nice dry paper air filter may prevent you having MAF sensor issues that will send you chasing your tail and costing you possibly hundreds spondoolies.
