Joe's E30 325i Sport - new engine started!

The E30 has a pretty decent boot! No way I'd have been able to fit all of this cardboard into the e46.

My friend got his wedding photos through, and there's a couple of car (without anyone else in the photo, which I dunno if he'd want sharing!). Only a low res screen grab, but still, quite nice photos I thought.

Forget the Z4 - it's all about that Rav4! That chrome bumper strip... beautiful!

She's a beaut Joe, maybe a daily option when the 330d dies?! You'd fit the scene for sure :P

I'm not sure I can wait until the 330d dies to own such a fine piece of automotive work.

Think of the social elite I could join - half asleep mums on the school run (with an inferred right to drive wherever/whenever, regardless of right of way...), the elderly who aren't really sure where they're going, or what the speed limit is (40 everywhere's safest, on average, right?)! I'm not sure my social standing could cope with such a sharp upturn...

However, I guess I'd trade sitting exclusively in the outside lane of the motorway for lane two of any given road, regardless of traffic load and number of lanes. Not sure I could live with that downgrade in motorway superiority...

Intermittent grinding noise from the front right wheel had got worse and worse. Turned out to be the wheel bearing. A surprisingly simple job. I reckon it's about a hour or two's slow paced work. They come as a complete hub unit, so dead easy to change - no need to press fit bearings or grease them or anything.

Happily, there's enough space in the garage to comfortably work on the car too. I'm just waiting on some new hub nuts from BMW so I can complete the job. (Another part that's cheaper from BMW direct than eBay!)

Ah, no. There is Pete's old worktop under the car catching any oil, and some of it propped up against the wall by my bike, but the kitchen cupboards have stayed as they are. Too much effort to change them, and they're not bad condition anyway.

Wheel bearing replaced, noise still present. D'oh! It needed doing anyway, so no real hardship there, and saved myself a blemish on my MOT record :)

I've also stopped the fuel leak with a full tank too, so I can finally fill it up without getting high of the smell of petrol for the first 20-60 miles! I thought it was to do with the removal of the charcoal canister. This emissions thing (that the PO removed) had a vapour pipe that ran from the engine bay to the petrol tank (via an expansion tank). I removed the pipe that ran the length of the car as it was rusty (MOT advisory), and didn't think it was needed. As it leaked when it was full, I first thought it was overflowing from that tank (given the routing of the pipe work, this seemed impossible to me), so I started looking into replacing the pipe. I filled it up yesterday and started looking properly before spending any money on new parts. Turns out that it was just the fuel level sender for the passenger side of the tank wasn't seated right, so fuel sloshed out as you cornered. Reseating it, and hitting it into place harder than before and it's problem solved. :D

Not really added to this, largely as the forum has got more quiet (thanks, Facebook), and largely as there's nothing to report as it's been SORN since June, when the MOT/insurance/tax ran out, and I ran out of funds to renew them due to moving house. Since I've recovered financially, it's been winter time, so I left it off the road with a view to getting it back out in the spring.

Since I've had it, the brakes have worked, but have always lacked feel/immediacy compared to a more modern car, and I don't like this. I trust them to stop me, but they've not as pleasant to drive with as the E46. I found a similar thing with my old Polo GTI, which was cured nicely with some 4 piston brakes up front. To that end, enter stage:

RX-7 front 4 piston brakes, combined with VW Golf mk2 G60 (or Corado G60) 280mm brake discs. With the brackets, they bolt straight on, pretty much.

Only a trial fit for now, as I need to hook up the brake hoses, sort out the backing plate, which had to be cut back to house the bigger caliper carrier, and I need to order the correct size spacers. I'm hopeful it'll add some feel though. Internet reports that the 4 smaller pistons have nearly the same area as the single large one in the stock caliper, so it shouldn't mess with brake bias or need new MCs or anything. We'll see...

And this makes me glad that I bought a couple of sets of spare wheels for standing the car up on during periods of non-use - no wonder I kept stalling it last time I tried to pull it out of the garage!
