BMW UK Sourcing an original E46 Saloon for photoshoot

Recommended Posts

Wonder why they wanted a saloon when the first three are coupes.

No point using coupe if they're going for the "evolution" of the series look..

Being totally pedantic, the only true coupe in that photo is the E36. The 2-door E30 had the same roof-line as the 4-door so therefore it's not a coupe, and as I mentioned before, the E21 was only ever made as a 2-door. :)

Lower roof line compared to standard cars, I thought. (Coupé - french for 'cut' roughly translated)

Not sure how stuff like an RX-8 which is the only model shape can be called a coupe in that case though, as there's no high roof version to compare against.

I think that's how they call the gran coupe's and the Merc CLS' Coupes too..

As far as i'm concerned though - anything with 2 doors is a coupe! 4 doors is a Saloon, 5 is hatchback or Estate (depending on how the tail gate opens). :P

Its all got a bit messy these days with regards to what's a coupe and what isn't. I just hate it when a 4 door car with a 'sporty' rear gets called a coupe!

I always thought it was lower roofline and 2 doors too.

Can't really call a 2 door corsa or fiest a coupe after all...

You don't get 2 door corsa's or fiestas which is what I'm getting at as they don't have a boot they have a hatch (hence hatchback) a boot doesn't have a window to it.

That's why I always thought coupe was 2 doors with a boot.

Nah! They're 3-doors. :D You don't get Corsas or Fiestas with 2 doors + a boot.

TriggerFish's observation re;- "coupe" is spot-on. It's from the French for "cut" - meaning a lower or reshaped roof line. ...... And a coupes aren't limited to 2 doors - check Google Images for "Rover P6 coupe". It's the best example of saloon vs. coupe I can think of at the moment.

indeed! Can't belive they'd say your car wasn't good enough especially for that video - you can't even see the rear arches

Exactly! I think they were worried that it might end up overtaking the F30 with all the power under the hood! :P

So they've posted the images on the BMW site now too:

http://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/new-vehicles/3.html?cvsd

BMW_3S_anniversary_1998.jpg.resource.143

If you look on the site the image of the E36 is front-on! They easily could've done that with mine..

Expletives come to mind! lol

Also - Pre-facelift SE's didn't come with MV1's did they?

So in the pictures they jumped straight from the E46 to whatever that new thing is called.

Finding a Bronzit, Chromie E30 must have been a challenge too, especially in the decent condition it appears to be in.

Is it me or have BMW picked out all the cars from the first/earliest years of production?

It's quite clear to me that they are trying to make the older models look as 'dated' as they can, that's fine for a sale point of view (I doubt many people besides us lot would even pick up on this), but I feel that they should at least acknowledge how great those older models were and still are compared to half the other scrap that's out there today.

Oops, my mistake.

I also noticed that the registration is the same for the E36 in the video and in the pictures, somehow it has magically changed colour!

According to the DVLA it's still Red.
