GJN
Is Halfords BMW spec. fully synthetic oil for an '02 330i sport any good? Fraction of the price of the Castrol Edge I usually get, but I'm getting reluctant to spend top $ on a 13 year old 100k mile car. The Halfords stuff is 5W30, Castrol Edge 0W40. Is it qany good for an older engine? Cheers.
PeeBee
I've heard that on an older engine with more wear you are sometimes better using a slightly thicker oil.
marc l
It needs to meet LL01 or LL04 spec I personally would use something from the premium brands.
shafz
i was using 5/30 in my 330 (140k at the time) and it was drinking oil i switched to 5/40 and oil consumption improved dramatically here is something i posted not too long ago http://www.e46zone.com/forum/topic/58628-mixing-oils/page-2#entry863637 note: both oils conform to BMW LL spec
Dee330Ci
I use this all the time and haven't had any issues. The cars on 134k and gets a change of oil every 6 or so months. The way I see it, if it meets LL01 spec then that's good enough for me. Marcus
CharlE46
I'm now using their 5W30 fully synth as it fully meets BMW's LL04 standard (required for my engine) Engine runs a lot smoother now than when I was running a more "premium" brand. This subject has been discussed before, have a read through a couple - http://www.e46zone.com/forum/topic/50823-halfords-oil-4l-for-l10/ http://www.e46zone.com/forum/topic/21809-what-oil-do-i-need-for-my-e46/

DJ Syxx
I've used the halfords one before and its fine. Its BMW approved so should be no issues with quality.
GJN
I went for Castrol Edge 0W40 (as usual) in the end. I was a bit concerned that the viscosity was lower on the Halfords LL01 spec oil. I heard that people with oil consumption issues on older engines have switched to higher viscosities in that LL01 range and have seen an improvement, so I didin't want to go the other way. May be totally misguided theory, but there you go. BTW I already replaced my CCV, and oil consumption with 0W40 isn't so bad, but I'd rather keep it that way.
