incredirog
Just wanted to say after a lot of reading and buying some adapters. The HK speakers are already in a plastic adapter ring which will fit better than any piece of mdf or abs you can buy from eBay. I had not read this anywhere so wasted £6. Peel the tiny metal tabs back and remove, then orientate your speaker to suit your application pop a few pilot holes in and screw it down. I also used some foam tape in the sandwich but it’s probably not necessary, bmw used glue. momo
dontpannic
Interesting - so 6.25" speakers fit? I've been tempted to replace my HK setup as I have some of the speakers starting to degrade and crackle at certain frequencies but the amp and speaker wiring put me off, though I suspect if I were to get a pinout of the HK amp I could just bridge some wiring to pass the speaker level output from my headunit straight to the speakers. incredirog
yes they absolutely fit no cutting anywhere just peeled the plastic ring off the old speaker and mounted the new speaker too it, then screwed it back down like it was before
dontpannic
Additional question - are you replacing the HK amp or literally just wiring up to the existing speaker connections? Do the speakers work/sound OK? I was always under the impression that the HK speakers were an odd resistance value and you'd need to replace the amp as well. incredirog
Sorry only just seen this question, I took the whole interior from an HK car, so door card speakers were HK. I looked at retro fitting the whole HK system but it’s a lot of work for not a lot of benefit so I went for aftermarket speakers and factory wiring. For the brief time I had HK speakers and standard stereo they seemed to work fine. I now have aftermarket speakers and android Chinese head unit with no external amp and it sounds better than the original HK setup.
dontpannic
Gotcha, I see. I might do some probing at some stage - my HK speakers are slowly but surely giving up the ghost, but if I can track back the door wiring to the HK amp in the back then I can de-pin the HK amp and use the factory wiring in an aftermarket amp with aftermarket speakers - that way I only have to run the RCA and power through the car. Not sure if you'd know, but are all the speaker connections independent going back to the boot (I.e. 6 wires from each front door +/- for tweeter, mid bass, and midrange, 2 from each rear door, then 2 each for the subs?) I guess I just need to stop being lazy and get my multimeter on continuity and do some probing.
incredirog
I really can’t remember, they might be bridged within the door so two wires from the amp for each door then splits 3 ways. it all just went into a wrapped loom though so who knows! good luck with it and get some door card fasteners in advance, complete pain breaking a couple and having door card rattle with your new thumping bass! dontpannic
