incredirog
Any one got any experience with these? Thinking of getting a pre facelift for the missus and to expand my hobby of pro longing the life of knackered BMW’s.. it’s the mk2 version I’m looking at Edited October 16, 2021 by incredirog
dunk1
I found this which might help https://fourwheeltrends.com/what-are-the-best-years-for-the-bmw-x5/ I asked my local Indy a while ago about getting an X5 and he said buy a Landcruiser lol
incredirog
cheers for that, I did some reading and talked myself out of it, gonna have to be another bland VAG I think. can’t fault the touran to be fair, got it with a blown turbo and it’s only wanted for a cam belt service in 6 years. boring though Edited October 18, 2021 by incredirog
momo
The early E70 diesel is still the M57N I believe? So still a great engine. They went to the N57 in 2013 - avoid that engine like the plague! The newer N engines have the timing chain issues. I've heard of both the N47 (2.0ltr) and M57 (3.0ltr) both having timing chain issues. It's about a £1500-3000 fix so avoid! M57 is bullet-proof. Just needs the flaps doing as usual. Generally it seems to be OK from what i've heard. No first-hand experience of them but they do seem to be better than the E53. I'd deffo consider one. I've heard they can be quite heavy on fuel, though. Which for me isn't an issue as I WFH now so just need something big and comfy.
incredirog
the buying guides I read were quite condemning and it would be so hard to find one that’s been cherished at a reasonable price. big fan of the M57 from my 330d days! momo
Don't forget you'll only ever hear the bad reports on buying guides and forums because people go online to share bad experiences. Nobody would ever buy a car if we only ever listened to the buying guides! lol The rear airbag failure seems to be a fault that's come across from the MK1. Front propshaft failure seems to be on the 40d only but was recalled. Electrical issues are much of a muchness really. Personally it's still nothing to put me off them. At least the floors and sills aren't made of cheese like the E46!
dunk1
Its so easy to get too much info these days but some is very helpful I'm on the hunt for another SUV 4x4 but if you search every single one has a potential wallet emptying problem waiting to happen. I really fancied a Q7 4.2 TDi but timing chains/tensioners are an expensive engine out job, the boss at a local Audi specialist went through the Q7 models potential dramas and I'm looking at other stuff now. Porsche Cayenne is on my short list but I shall leave it a while as prices are all too high for everything at the moment. Whether they will drop in the near future god knows. BCA properly messed up the second hand market as far as buyers and traders are concerned Edited October 19, 2021 by dunk1 momo
