High Coolant Temperature Concern

Recommended Posts

I'm new to BMW's and have recently bought a 2004 330D 204 HP.

The car's travelled 170,000 miles.

I've been observing the coolant temperature on the OBD and the temperature rises to about 95 Celsius after 15-20 mins of driving.

Thereafter it fluctuates between 98c - 104c.

This seems a bit high to me and I'm wondering if maybe I have a problem with a thermostat not opening fully. Alternatively, maybe my radiator is scaled up.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I think this is normal.

Thanks for you input, much appreciated!

It sit at 100c in traffic.

Also the needle gauge is steady in the middle position once warmed up so it seems like the system is operating normally. I may still consider changing the pump, thermostat and header tank as a preventative maintenance measure. Not sure if the current parts are the originals or not!

Cheers.

Diesels are happy between 90-105c

Petrols are happy between 95-110c.

The diesel engine is more efficient at a cooler temp. In traffic expect both to get up to around 110 tops before the main stat fully opens.

hope this helps everyone.

C.
