  1. Hi Guys,

After some help if you could please.

My car is fighting me on everything I am trying to do. I have a 330 e46 sport cabriolet and today swapped the soft top over. I bought a soft top from a breaker a complete top that is in much better nick than the one the car had on which had been vandalised at some point. The roof I bought was tested and working on the breaker car. Any way I disconnected the hydraulic lines unplugged the electrical connections and removed the old top. Fitted the new top connected the hydraulic lines and folded it into the storage bin and relocked the tonneau cover with the allen key in between the rear seats. I now have an issue where the led on the roof switches is flashing red and not allowing me to do anything.

I assume the car thinks the roof is partially open. How can I read any fault codes that might be on the roof module or how can I reset the system to see if it then realises that the roof is folded away. No real rush to sort it as I have the hard top on but would like to figure it out soon so I can get the interior back in the car.

    Thanks

    Matt

  2. Hi there long time lurker that is now finally getting my car sorted.

So I have owned this car since 2011.  I used it to drive to my wedding and love the thing.  A year ago I got a job where I do 40,000 miles a year so the bmw was laid up and has sat unloved for a year and isn't looking her best.

I fitted a new battery pumped up the tyres and she sprang into life a little rough running but that was to be expected and soon cleared.  I took it for an mot and surprisingly it went straight through despite running rough.  Emissions were ok.  I have found the cause of the rough running which was an air leak and have got a new hose to fit.  The traction control is also broken and before it was taken off the road this was put down to dsc pressure sensors which have also been ordered.  I have also ordered new brake pressure wear sensors as although there is plenty of meat on the pads the light is on and I assume it is a sensor so changing all four will fix that.  Finally a new thermostat is on order due to the ecu constantly firing p1620 error code when being read.  Once all these bits are fitted the car should be running sweet and hopefully the garage will be able to fix why the glovebox keeps falling down.  Then there is a list of work to do and this is where I need some help to find reputable companies if possible.

I have a new roof to go on and this will be being done by autotecnic in lutterworth I have used them before for some work and their quote was reasonable and as I expect it to be a tricky job I would rather it goes to a bmw specialist as a hydraulic pipe also needs swapping from my original tatty roof.

Once this is done I need to find a bodyshop I want a full respray in the original titan silver and the mirrors fitting.  I have a rust spot on the rear arch that despite a new quarter being fitted keeps coming back and I want a proper job that will tackle this and stop it from coming back again.  As well as this there is a small spot under the tailgate that has been treated as well but comes back so I want that sorting to.  I would like to have the arches rolled so if I decide to go for different wheels in the future there is plenty of clearance, and finally I want the mv1s refurbishing in gun metal grey.

Final finishing touches for the outside would be new headlight lenses and tailpipes for the exhaust.

Then it will be onto the interior the drivers side window seems very lose and rattly when partially down.  I have tried to tighten it with no joy so will be getting a new regulator fitted and the same with the drivers rear as that also seems lose.  The door cards seem lose and not all screws go in so I think I am missing some of the fixings which I will replace.  Once this is done I want to find someone who can spruce up the interior it isn't terrible but needs some professional care to get it back to its best can anyone recommend somewhere?

Finally at the moment I am planning to add a hardtop for next winter as the roof is already tatty that I have on I am not concerned for this winter.

The list of things will probably change the more I look at other cars and see things.  I can imagine it may get lowered on different wheels but that will be if and when everything else has been done.

I have already done the audio with a dynavin unit and two amps a sub and two pairs of component speakers front and back.  I have also fitted a piper cross induction kit and angel eyes as well as led rear lights.

I will keep this updated as progress goes on and would really appreciate any companies you can recommend.  I am based in Coventry so anywhere around the midlands would be good but for the right job I would travel further.

A couple of pictures of how she looked before being parked up.  I have got any since I have got it road legal again but it isn't a pretty sight.

  4. Hi guys bit of an update the guy selling the roof has said he will swap it over with me for know charge which is a result. The reason I got the roof cheap is a split hydraulic pipe which I wasn't concerned about as I thought I could just use mine on the new roofs frame etc. how difficult is it to swap this pipe. It runs from one side of the car to the other and is for the right hand side of the roof. Part two on realoem. It looks like it shouldn't be too difficult to change with the roof off of my car before putting the new one in but wanted to make sure that was the case. Thanks for you help so far guys much appreciated Matt

  5. On the new roof one of the pipes is broken so was going to swap the pipe from my roof or just use the canvas on my roof mechanism. The problem is I have never undertaken anything like this and am worried about doing it without someone with more knowledge than me or a guide which I can't find I wouldn't want to end up taking all day and losing light with no roof being on the car. Really this is a plea for help lol

  6. Hi guys Hoping you can help me please. I have an 02 330 sport convertible and the roof is awful on it I think it has been vandalised in the past and an attempt to cover it up was done before I bought the car. After two years of ownership it has got to the point where i am going to replace it. I have bought a second hand black roof from eBay with a damaged hydraulic pipe but all motors and everything needed there. My plan is to swap the whole roof over and just use my hydraulic pipe. I have two questions one is has anyone done this and do they have a guide because I have never tackled something like this and secondly is it easier to swap the whole roof as I plan or just the canvas onto my working roof. Finally anyone fancy some beer tokens and plenty of tea to help me do it as I'm dreading it lol. Cheers Matt

  7. Hi guys,

I'm stuck changing the jump start point on my e46 330 msport cabriolet. The original one has burnt out and is causing the battery light to come on intermittently. I have a spare lead that I have bought and want to get it fitted before the weather changes. I also want to do an oil change and reset the computer once I have. Tea and biscuits will be provided lol. I would like to do this work with some help and also get to meet some new members as I have lurked around these parts since having the car but not really got involved in any meets or shows like I did in the mr2 scene when I was in it and would love to get back to that.

    cheers

    Matt

  8. Guess I should park up somewhere level and measure from the floor to the boot or something like that to ensure that it isn't already sitting level as if it is and I fit this part it will make it worse lol hoping the rubbing has been fixed with and arch roll and realigning the rear bumper I think it may have been the corner of the bumper catching.

  9. Just read the entire thread and progress is great a lovely car. Quick question regarding the spring cup. Is that just the same one as the passenger side and therefore levels the car up as on my vert. I have had some arch rubbing on the drivers side but not the passenger and wondered if that could resolve the problem.

    cheers

    Matt

  10. Haven't got any pics of the car that I can post i'm afraid. Spec is as follows

    tiptronic auto gearbox

    stunning silver body work.

    unmarked black power hood

Every optional extra fitted to this car!

    climate control

    4 electric windows

    power fold heated mirrors

    sat nav

    auto dimming mirror

    cd multichanger

    black leather seats

    piano black trim

    xenon lights

    front fog lights

    rear parking sensors

tv (with tv in motion fitted so works when car is moving)

    electric seats

    heated seats

m sport steering wheel with controls

    tax and moted.

    full bmw service history.

    17" m sport wheels

cooling system done (needs replacing at 90k) dont buy one that hasnt had it done.

Just renewed power steering pump and both aux belt and a/c belt.

drives great everything works spot on!

    up at £5300

If I were to sell my car in the open market I would be looking for around 5k but no one would pay that unless they saw the car and fell in love with it which is what I did when I bought it 3 years ago

Deal is my car + £400

so although I would want 5k for mine in a sale I would accept offers around 4.5k

The cheapest msport convertible I have seen with sat nav and the right colour paint and leather is £6300 but will not take mine in part exchange which has been the same story from many dealers.

My view is this if I do this deal realistically I would say that the car cost me 4.9k add the bodykit £800 painted and fitted a set of wheels £400 widescreen sat nav £250 add in a decent parrot kit if I can't get bluetooth to work with a bmw module £200 probably the same price for the bmw module

anyway total spemt would then be £6550 so a little more expensive than buying an msport admittedly which should mean it isn't worth doing. However I need my car and having to sell it then find a replacement would take time and it could take a while to shift my mr2 the market seems to be slow on them. So for an extra £200 to have a car that has the spec I want and leaves me not having to rush to find a car appeals to me. If that makes sense happy to listen to other suggestions though. The other thing is I could do the planned upgrades over time when funds permit. I haven't really got the extra money to go and buy the msport right now.

    cheers

    Matt

  11. Yeah the deal is fair the 2 is modified so never easy to value against other cars. To be fair the price of this car compared to an msport based on what I value the 2 at means spending the money on making it look like and msport would mean that it still works out cheaper than buying a vert msport. Just the query regarding the stereo and bluetooth to get answered and I will then be pretty much sold on the idea

  12. I take your point the reason for potentially getting this se is because he will take my car for a good price on part exchange. It has the sport steering wheel and the interior looks perfect it is literally the kit wheels and widescreen sat nav with Bluetooth would be perfect then. How different are the se side skirts and m sport side skirts can get the kit for 500 pounds so not to bad the car is a 2000 model in silver

  13. Hi guys

I currently drive a toyota mr2 turbo and am looking at a bmw 330 convertible to replace this with. The one I have seen that is interested in doing a deal is an se auto looks nice and decent mileage. The questions I have are:-

The car has the earlier sat nav with the casette on the right hand side. Is it just plug and play to upgrade to the widescreen version? Also would I gain anything other than a bigger screen by doing this?

I would also like to add bluetooth handsfree to the car if I get it and would ideally like to do this through the standard headunit if possible. What would I need to do this and how much is it likely to cost?

Next is bodykit the car is an se how much can I get the msport kit for and how difficult is it to fit and what else does the m sport have over the se?

Wheels is the last thing to bombard you with obvious choice is the mv2 from the m sport but what other choices are there available. i want to keep the car fairly subtle but not like everything else out there.

Sorry for the bombardment of questions on my first thread. Looks like a great forum you have here and hope to settle in and start giving back to the forum once I have learnt my way around the car.

    thanks a lot

    Matt

  14. I am now looking at 330s and also the 330d which is meant to be good although I think I will go petrol love the sound of the straight six the only reason I was going for the 323 was that it was going to be a swap for the mr2 which was easier than selling. Its tough selling a car at the moment so the opportunity was there to swap and I was going to do it unfortunately the chap with the bm decided that he wanted to keep the car. So am back to square one selling my car any recommendations on where to advertise I have it on mr2oc and pistonheads but no interest so far.

    cheers

    Matt

  15. I would love to keep my mr2 but we are planning kids and need rear seats and 4 doors which this has also has some nice ac schnitzer bits on it as well i have had mr2s for years but time for a change will keep the mrs which isn't worth anything as a project and probably v6 it and get her a golf or something that sort of size. I'm looking forward to the test drive and just hope its a good car will feel slower than the mr2 thats for sure the mr2 is running 300bhp a big drop to 180 in the 323 but it looks the part and i'll have to make do with just the looks and not the power for now. Only mods I want to do to it is fit bluetooth for the phone and something for the ipod as i'm used to having dvds of music in the mr2 and going back to cds is a hassle but will see what I think to the car tomorrow and let you know thanks for the welcome guys.

    Matt
