Sam
thanks guys - well i spoke to BMW GB and they said to book it in at my local BMW garage so done that. Still have to pay a diagnostic fee but if BMW decide to foot the bill I will get the money back. Fingers crossed! Dont accept that, totally not on from BMW. The problem is their subframe! I argued the toss and got it checked for free, fixed for free with free courtesy car and insurance. It was this though... took some abuse!

So put the 1 series in my dads name so he can drive it as he has always liked them and im driving my previous car - a 2.0 zetec focus which i prefer much more than a matiz. Our tyre wear showed the back passenger tyre was worn badly on the inside. So maybe check the wear. Or jack it up and follow the guide attached on the OP. Failing that, just take it to BMW and insist they check for the subframe issue for free!

330ci DropTop
mate i used to have those clunks and tappings noises.. it ended up being the rear passengers side spring being broken.
Sam
mate i used to have those clunks and tappings noises.. it ended up being the rear passengers side spring being broken. Ah, you've reminded me. We did have this same problem. Broken spring (about 2 inches). We got the it replaced for £75 from an indie, we just went with it as we were doing 1500 3 days later. They recommended doing both to level the car out. But it seemed ok without doing both. made a vibrating noise when pulling if i recall.

jamiesonmurray
i had the subframe problem, asked the main dealer calderton in inverness to check out the noise and they tried to sell me new trailing arm bushes, after forking out £65 for one anti roll bush the previous year i declind and got it up on a ramp to see myself! i was distraught when i saw that rip in the floorpan, i phoned calderton in inverness and they said they had never seen it before and just wern't intrested, wouldn't even return my calls so next time i was in aberdeen i went to john clark bmw and they openly addmitted that they had seen it before, the car was passed it's 7 year body warranty by 6 months, had a non main dealer ( but bmw specialist) service history, they said they had to apply to bmw head office they got back to me a week later and they did the job for me and i had to pay £200 towards it, took about 2 weeks, allthough i had to pay for the wheel allignment, they replaced the trailing arm bushes for free john clark bmw in aberdeen, the salesmen are complete wa****s but the service depatment have always been spot on, did not get a hire car but i had a spare car anyway, never even pushed for one, if i knew about this website and the other people who have had the same problem the i'd have tried to get it for free
Aly
Mines went last winter, I ended up going to my mate who is great at welding, cost me abt £250 all in... Although I wish I went to the stealership now!
J555ONE
Anyone know where i can get these weld in kits? Or ever what they look like, i might copy it myself and weld it in.
shakes
i had a look at the subframe this morning and i found a very small crack from the original spot welds.. pics attached.. i can fix this no probs with a small weld and repaint. i then checked the diff mounts, all looked good. i have a 99 318 and noticed its worse on the bigger engines. disappointed it needs a small weld, but glad its not bad. shakes

First the denial, then the dreaded waiting to hear from BMW UK...then all of a sudden the dealer knew about it. I even sent through the TIS report to the warranty manager at the dealer and he still said he had never seen this before. Dickhead.
