Subframe Issues

If you have full BMWSH, then thats fair enough. Has anyone had their car fixed who does not have full service history and the car was over 7 years of age?

I also got the following few e-mails from BMW yesterday, their replies are in Italic and mine are in bold.

Thank you for your response to my original e-mail and I will be seeking legal advice and talking to various consumer groups before I decide what steps to take next.

Regarding the e-mail below, one thing I would like to clarify is you mention you cannot review goodwill on a vehicle that has not been seen in your dealer network for seven years and the last time it was seen was July 2003, which is actually less than 7 years. Can you please clarify?

We are unable to review goodwill on a repair when the vehicle has attained seven years of age, i.e. seven years from the date of registration, regardless of service history. The last time your vehicle was in our dealer network was July 2003 which is 83 months, seven years all but one month, and we would not review any repairs on this vehicle, even if it was less than seven years old, as it would not have full BMW service history.

Sorry to bother you again but for clarification, even if I did have full BMWSH, once the car is seven years of age you would not have fixed it under your goodwill scheme. Is that correct?

Yes that is correct. Our goodwill policy cannot be viewed as an indefinite warranty and therefore we have to implement an age limitation. Six years of age is double the three year dealer warranty, BMW therefore deem this a fair and reasonable time frame. There must come a time, in the life of a vehicle, when the customer has to take responsibility for any repair that is necessary on their vehicle, which is no longer supported by a warranty.

Does that all sound a bit condradicting to anyone?

Hi.

I've just joined this forum to post my experiences - I've been sharing my experience of this over on the Alpina Register forum. Here's a link...

Where did you buy your car from? If it was from a dealer, you could try a small claim under the sale of goods act. If it was a private sale, you're pretty much stuffed.

I know someone close to the auto press, and their interest in running the story was non-existent on the basis that BMW generate a significant proportion of their advertising revenue. No reply from Watchdog. It seems we're all thrown to the dogs in the UK, meanwhile BMW US and Germany have better consumer protection laws. Totally sucks.

All that said, use the independent repairer in my posts, and it shouldn't be as painful as the quotes you get from the main stealers.

Good luck

Hi

Okay, started noticing creaking on cornering today (left or right)

also have a thud/thump when changing gear (also this occurs when stationary)

heard this could be any of the following:

Driveshaft guibo

subframe Bushes

Broken spring

or

the sub frame :o

I phoned BMW , sent the report over and copied in BMW Head Office. they got back to me really quick and want me to take the car in tomorrow morning for a free sub frame inspection, say it will take 20 mins.

thoughts opinions/advice?

How old is it? They are not doing cars over 10 years from memory.

Good job so far, just don't let them take you for a ride.

My 323 had the same symptoms, had the thud after the subframe was fixed, didn't cause any problems.

Ok- update from BMW. this is what they said.

Subframe "was" cracked.

It would appear the previous owner had welding carried a while back (t**t, why didnt he get BMW to do a warranty claim?) I saw this for myself and did take a picture. the welding isnt the best to be fair, but it looks as though a strenghthening plate has been welded on the passenger side.

when standing under the ramps, and pushing the car up, the creck sounds lik it is coming more from the shock/spring, certainly not the sub frame (sigh of relief!)

BMW was pretty helpful to be fair, but the dealer did say that he doesnt think BMWwould do anything due to the age. I confirmed with him that the weld looks secure and there are NO cracks.

kinda happy, but the weld/previous repair has caused me some concern. so im taking it into a well know specialist nxt week for a second opinion, and maye bite the bullet and get the whole thing done again. Least this creackng sound isnt the sub frame!

hello guys,

i hope someone can help me.

my 2000 reg 323ise has done 179k now and recently the suspensions turned into jelly with a cookie crisp. the front end is terrible! knocks like a woodpecker and steers itself and the rear end sounds like i got Tweetie Pie in a head lock. constantly squeeking and im sure it can be heard outside the car too?

is this signs of this fault and with my mileage would my car be eligible for this to be sorted by BMW?

thanks for any feed back.

With that mileage the problem could be more fundamental. If your car hasn't been well maintained the common wear and tear suspension items could be overdue for replacement:

Front lower control arms

Front lower control arm rear bushes

Rear springs may be cracked

Shocks all round

Is there any information to suggest that the problem affects cars built after Feb 2000 ? For example, a 330 Se touring with a build date of August 2000 ? Considering buying one & don't fancy getting involved in these sort of repairs :o

My 2002 build is getting the job done by BMW :P

It's the rear subframe mount usually the passenger side I found that getting the plates welded over is a better fix than replacing the panel the problem is caused by BMW not using thickenough steel for the Pannel they know this and from 2002 all 3 series had the strengthing plates welded in at the factory bm told me the car gas to be under 10 years old have a full service history for them to do it but some BMW race tuners use much thicker plates and if you drive car hard this is the better option this is what I had done and cars been perfect since and I do drive hard!!
