Jom Coilovers - Warning!!!

Recommended Posts

Right now that i have your attention people.....

I have owned my JOM's for 6 months now and have to report they have been very good for that time - until today!

Pulling into work i had a massive bang from the front of the car and the steering wheel ripped from my hands (luckily at about 3mphs when parking)

Got the car apart tonight after work, (before attempting to move the car) and found that the locating pin on the leg that fits into the groove in the hub had sheared clean off, allowing the strut to rotate and bending the droplink locating plate in the process. (of note the hub bolt was still damn tight and had to be leaned on to undo!!)

Strut off, the droplink plate straightened in the vice, and a good family friend has cleaned up the strut body and mig welded 2 new 'locating pins' - one in original position, and one low down - onto the leg so the hub bolts goes between them.

All refitted and everything seemes fine and car has now been driven home.

I got lucky - imagine this at 60mph or so on a fast road or roundabout!!

However, this has now jaded my views of these as a product and as such i will be removing the other front strut tomorrow and getting that welded as i have no faith in the JOM locating pin.

I am not saying that anybody else on the froum will have an issue, or anybody else ever in the world, but if you have a set of these, next time you have the wheel off, shine a torch down there and see what condition your pin is in.

(I will upload pics from image shack of the leg less the pin but needed to put bacy together asap so not of the welded on until i get the other done tomorrow)

Sounds like you've had a touch there, glad it was only 3mph!

How long was the warranty on them?

X 2 ! Damn lucky You werent going any quicker !

Warranty ? Its irrelevant ! It aint gonna help you much if you're doing 60 mph when this snaps off !

I was thinking i'd sue them for damage to my car if they where still under warranty (awaits the flame for claim brigade).

Edit, read the OP wrong, seems the damage is only to the JOM product?

warranty is 2yrs - but i don't have struts to fit while i send them back - needed it fixed then and there.

on the warrenty front, if it snapped at speed, and the car was thrown from road and totalled, would you be able to claim from JOM?? or would your insurance cover it etc??

cheers for the kind words guys

hope to god nobody else ever has an issue

I was kind of waiting for a topic like this.

They just seemed too cheap. Hopefully it's a one off. I'd be writing them one hell of a letter! I'm glad you're all right though mate!

Fook that.. Did you change your strut top-mounts when you fitted the JOMS? If your top mount bearings are stuffed then this will put a huge load on that pin when you turn your wheel. Also the the main 'clampage' of that main bolt should stop that pin taking any strees.. are you sure that bolt was tight, as that pin is just to make sure the strut is aligned perfectly in the hub?

It'll be the first things to check when you take the strut off though.

Where did these JOM things come from anyway? Nobody ever even mentioned them and suddenly (seemingly overnight but I bet there was some massive thread somewhere) they seem to be the thing everyone wants!

I remember when all the posts were about eibachs. What happened to them??
