Jom Coilovers - Warning!!!

Recommended Posts

Where did these JOM things come from anyway? Nobody ever even mentioned them and suddenly (seemingly overnight but I bet there was some massive thread somewhere) they seem to be the thing everyone wants!

I remember when all the posts were about eibachs. What happened to them??

I blame it on you, Nate. You seem to be the ring leader of the 'slam it and stretch it' crew. Always encouraging them :P

yep its all my fault for trying to be different and show you the error of your over tyred cars with 4x4 ride heights!! lol

:P I'm going to start a new trend, monster truck e46's. Run it on 25's and raise the car up about 3 foot.

Reckon it'd catch on? Atleast there'd be no more issues with speed bumps :)

Can't say I'm surprised. There must be 12-15 people running them on here now, and one set fails withing 6 months? Not a good ratio whatever way you slice it. Just glad you're OK.

Sorry to raise the point again as I have a few times now, but whilst a leaky shock may be expected even from expensive brands, a material part shearing off is just cheap manufacturing. Part of the cost saving will be materials... £50 a corner is shocking. Maybe OK on a £800 Golf, but some of you have them fitted to cars worth between £5-£10k.

What you looking at next Nate?

Kind of like torn subframes!

well i took the other side apart tonight and kell surprise - no pin!! oh s*** - how long till that one let go and twisted round as well i wonder!!

have welded this one up as per the other side so should be all good now.

also, the passenger side drop link has snapped - the cause of the pins shearing or caused by the pins shearing?

i now need a 3rd set of drop links in 6 months!! f*** sake.

jorge - these are the same ones you run mate from ebay - go and check them out if i were you!!

Very worrying, as i was about to buy a set of these next payday!

I know if I fit them now i will have lost all confidence in driving the car hard :P that's never good to be cornering and just hoping that it will be ok...

Although, i don't know much about suspension, can anyone fill me in as to where this pin is and what it does? As in the pics im not exactly sure what im looking at B)

yeah sorry guys - as you say bad batch maybe? stock bmw sprngs snap, subframes give way and eibachs also fail. i might the only one to ever had an issue!!

6 month old springs and subframes and even Eibachs don't give way though... OK, after 5+ years and over 50,000 miles you expect things to start deteriating in our climate..

I still don't get how that pin snapped, it should be under ZERO stress once the securing bolt is properly tightened (I normally go for the Fu.Ti. setting on my extension bar). Maybe the book torque setting isn't enough for these coilovers due to differences in materials or a slight diamter varience etc?

Either way, I think an email/call/letter to the JOM manufacturers is in order, or possibly the TUV(?) test company who passed it for 'quality'. Just imagine what would of happened if you were tanking it down a busy motorway! B)

(I normally go for the Fu.Ti. setting on my extension bar).

yeah - thats what i did this time. tbh other than this slight hic up, and i do consider it slight tbh now the shock has worn off, the shocks have been awesome.

and in the best i have blown the seal on bilstein dampers and snapped spax springs in under 6 months of use!!

as you say, the pin is not a stressed item, it is a location device to make sure the strut is in the right place, and should carry no load.

maybe i didn't tighten the hub bolt up enough, i'll never know now.

You definitely didn't tighten it up properly, I don't have a locating pin in on my offside shock and it's fine. That little bit of metal isn't anything structural, it's to make sure you put your hub back on in the right place. In fact probably the bolt being loose that put stress on the pin and snapped it.

Well, I have a snapped locating pin, few mm of metal just enough to get it in the right place.

i'm deffo with mike on this - i think i slatted the product to quick - but i'm sure others would have done the same.

on another note - i now habe 16cm long 2005 hyundai coupe drop links in place of the 11cm 96 onward ones as per jorge.....the difference is emense.

the front is much nicer, lighter steering, better damped almost, turn in is sharper etc

i think the 11cm one were pulling the roll bar back to far and putting strain on things having run both sets but i'm no suspension engineer - richy boy/keith and ideas/thought on it??
