JayP07
Thanks for the confirm/picture Marcus!! - My lights now work exactly hows yours do. One problem though - you don't use the bottom red boot lights as tail lights and from what I've seen they should be on too (as well as the two tail bulbs in the main cluster). Need someone with facelift lights to confirm? Bearing that in mind the boot lights would then have to go brighter if the fogs lights were on. So I wired my lights up exactly as its says in the guide and both tail lights came on as expected... however after pressing the brake a couple of times the bulb error lights came on: replacing all four lower tail lights with 5W bulbs gets rid of the error. with the brake pressed: with fog light & break on: So as it stands they're fine to use. However, this is not the complete retrofit and not the look I want to achieve. Tomorrow I'm going to see what the difference is in the boot light sockets. Facelifts have 3 wires cant remember if the pre is the same. Need some sleep now will look at this again in the am!
JayP07
Cheers Jay. I did find this link but havent really had time to read it properly yet let alone have another look at mine.... http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1149669 Eko, if you didn't change all the lower bulbs is probably the reason you still got errors (without checking I cant remember if you changed them all)?... There's loads of info in that link, that is a good find! The final BMW solution in there still mentions programming so I'm taking a fresh look at this myself and putting the guides to one side until i run out of ideas. Marcus
as far as I remember the proper facelift lighting up style is all 3 bottom for sides and the top is the brake. It isn't possible without reprogramming. its the programming that decides how they light up. I just like the look of the facelift light design. not too fussed how they light up, I cant see em when driving. JayP07

In the beginning, I definitely did the mod for the look not how they light up. However, in all honesty I'd prefer to have them the proper way. In my ignorance I have to ask what would happen if a third wire was added from the tail lights to power the boot bulb which would have to be another 5W bulb? (ignoring the fog light issues for a moment) - Do you think it will throw an error?
Eko
Jay I only changed one of the lower bulbs to 5w,that was the inner one at the bottom of the main light. Going to have another look at mine hopefully later today if possible. I too would prefer the boot light to come on too.
JayP07
Jay I only changed one of the lower bulbs to 5w,that was the inner one at the bottom of the main light. Going to have another look at mine hopefully later today if possible. I too would prefer the boot light to come on too. From what I've tried that makes sense... When I tried a mix of the 2 the errors come up. E try all 5W and we should all be in the same place. I bought some more 5W bulbs today to try some experiments. I also want to confirm what each of the wires are doing going into the boot lights... Do we have a write up for that? I'm in the middle of re-spraying my wheels so haven't had a chance to get back to this. Edited June 23, 2013 by JayP07
JayP07
Lads in the cable descriptions what does this line mean/related to? "signal wire to switch off consumer load (red/yellow)" Here is an example below to save you going back to page 1. Left side plug (ref X338) looks like: O4 O3 O2 O1 O8 O7 O6 O5 1 = Signal wire to boot lid light (white/brown) 2 = Ground (brown) 3 = Signal wire to switch off consumer load (red/yellow) 4 = NOT USED 5 = Left Brake Light (black/green) 6 = Left Indicator (blue/green) 7 = Left Tail Light (grey/green)*** extra light/wire, linked to pin 8 8 = Left Tail Light (grey/violet)
JayP07
I still haven't given up on this but I'm very close to doing so .... just to confirm this is what I'm trying to achieve 3 tail lights one independent brake light one fog on the right of the boot (this is a dual filament to account for the tail light) THANKS to Ed for the confirmation & pictures This illustration is the solution im thinking of to avoid reprogramming but I'm not sure if its possible so I'm putting it to the zone? Hope it makes sense... If I can't figure this out I'm just going to leave it as it is...
e46beast
Ez fella excellent diy but was wondering would this wiring setup work the same for the led 8 pin plug as I have some oem face lift led tails and want to replace my bulb setup just going from 6 pin to 8 pin so would this work if I followed your diy to convert cheers
mark46
Hi, Iv just read this whole DIY and cant actually find a DIY that works correctly , am I missing something ? Its a very complicated thread with no outcome. I want to fit face lift rear lights to my pre facelift . The facelift plug seems to have a spare wire on either side {grey/blue} and {grey/green} All the other wires can be colour matched to my pre facelift wires . Has anyone found out where to link this wire {if at all } ie...that does not present error codes ? What is the problem with leaving it un wired ? Is it just that there will be a red section of the cluster un light ? cheers , Mark
