n1k_ns Posted November 12, 2010 Report Share Posted November 12, 2010 Hi Guys, It was a PITA doing this myself for the first time (mainly the PAL/NTSC issue you will see below), and I’ve had quite a few PMs about how I did it, so thought i'd make a quick quide: (This guide is assuming you are using an iPod video as your input, but if not it will still be the same except for the iPod specific cables) You will need: 1) OEM Nav Screen & TV Module: 2) iPod Video (Mine is 80GB and was £40 used from CEX) 3) iPod AV output cable (Mine was £5 off ebay, see pic below): 4) TV-in-Motion Cable (Mine was £45 off ebay, see pic below): 5) TV Module AV Input Loom (Mine was £20 off ebay, see pic below): 6) Micro USB Charger Adapter (Not required but makes life easier. Mine was £2 off ebay, see pic below): When you have all of the above do as follows: 1) Fit the AV Input loom to the TV module (self explanatory) 2) Fit the TV in motion cable to the TV Module and follow the guide on how to activate it. 3) Run the iPod AV leads from the Sliding Cubby in the cabin (or wherever you want) under the rear bench through to the boot and connect the ‘iPod AV outputs’ to the ‘AV Inputs’ on the AV input loom (you may need some AV extension cables depending on where you are locating your iPod): 4) Turn your Nav screen to the AV channel 5) Set your iPod video to output AV (in the Video Settings menu) and also make sure it is set to output NTSC rather than PAL otherwise you will get a rolling fuzzy screen (see below) You should now have the iPod videos coming through the Nav screen: The next step (that I did) was to run the USB lead (that is part of the iPod AV Cable) through into the Ashtray (drilled a small hole, very easy). Then with the Micro USB adapter fitted in one of the rear ciggy lighter sockets you can simply slide open the ashtray, take out the USB cable (that is usually hidden when not in use), unflap the ciggy lighter (to reveal your micro USB adapter that is also usually hidden when not in use) and plug your iPod in to charge it up: As I said earlier, this step is not needed, but the alternative is to keep taking your iPod out of the car to charge it up! PITA! And it works really well! Hope this helps someone Edit: - **Something else to note here, is that when the Digital-Switchover happens in a few months, all the e46 owners with an Analogue TV Module (most of us I imagine) will no longer be able to pick up any TV signal in our cars, but the AV Channel will of course still work fine, so rather than buy a £200+ Digital TV Module, you may as well fit an iPod Video or an aftermarket Cheap Digital box and run it through the AV channel** Mindmaker 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

On my av converter cable I have 2 reds and 2 blacks. 2 for video audio in and 2 for video audio out.. On my ipod av cable I have red yellow and white ! Any tips on what I should be doing ? I can get sound through, and if I push the yellow or white one in half way I get a fuzzy picture, however if I push it in all the way I just get a blank screen and the audio stops. autosri Posted December 31, 2010 Report Share Posted December 31, 2010 nice write up not that it effects me with my single line display but there is a much neater way to do the usb charger if you are interested if you have a soldering iron you can split those usb chargers so you can see all the bits inside you can solder two wires onto the charger board the points will be obvious then scotch lock your two wires to the back of your fag lighter or any other ignition live that way it will always be connected and charge your ipod and you wont see any wires so will look more proffesional you dont have to do that you are more than welcome to tell me to shut up lol it was just an idea as i did the same thing for an ipod fm transmitter for my works van Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
n1k_ns Posted December 31, 2010 Author Report Share Posted December 31, 2010 Yeah I was originally planning to solder the USB directly into the ciggy lighter but after having a duff iPhone cable that needed to be replaced straight away I decided it was better to keep it removable. A proper USB jack hard wired into the ashtray would be pretty slick though! As for the video question, I actually had the same problem, when I unplugged the cables slightly I got some video but lost it when they were pushed back together. I'm on my mates iPad at the minute but when I'm home I'll have a look at what I did to fix it, I can't remember off the top of m head! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

CNL Remapping Posted January 2, 2011 Report Share Posted January 2, 2011 You will find this is an earth issue, if you connect an earth to the unit or lead this will fix it, I had the same issue with my Pioneer Avic 900bt through the front Aux imput, added an earth to the device/lead & all was good. You answered your own question there, if you can drive and still see video, you don't need the VIM cable Also has this been tested with the following... iTouch, Ipod Classic, iPad, iPhone? No reason why it shouldn't, it will accept any Video input. The only thing you may need to check is the iPod AV cable itself (as IIRC there are some cables that state 'iPhone 3G compatible' & 'iPhone 4 compatible' etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

BadzMaru Posted January 6, 2011 Report Share Posted January 6, 2011 Hi n1k_ns, My first question seems like a dumb question but I think theres two ways of getting tv-in-motion, one is some kind of software update without a cable and the other is using a cable... I'm not sure which one had been done on my car as I haven't checked.. The other question I had is probably related to your install instruction "Set your iPod video to output AV (in the Video Settings menu) and also make sure it is set to output NTSC rather than PAL otherwise you will get a rolling fuzzy screen" On the iphone 3G or 4 theres no Video settings menu so I wouldn't know if its set to NTSC or PAL, thats why I'm asking if its been tested on other Apple products... If you have a friend with any of the mentioned devices could you test it out? that would be great! What I really want is an iPhone or iPod Classic which can be integrated through the AV channel on the SatNav so that I can select movies using the standard SatNav Buttons rather than through the iPhone/Ipod Classic but I don't think a product like this exists, but this solution is still good! I'm now wondering if it wad that cable that caused my screen to go blank? I also had no idea i had rear ciggie lighters! Never been in the back to look lol. I've had a look at mine and its one of those blank bracket but taking that area apart tonight to fit the Bluetooth Antenna and Antenna bracket I've found that blank bracket contains something in there which has a lead going into it, I've no clue what its for... Nothing has really spot it on ! The sound is fine, and the picture is rolling if I push in the cable halfway. Nope, no need to remove the screen 4) will i need an AV extension cable if mounting the IPOD video near the hand brake centre consol? Yeah, i used a standard 1m AV cable (Yellow/Red/White) and it reaches the centre console Is there a step by step guide or video to doing this? in particular, which parts to remove and what plugs to put where? No guide that i'm aware of. Its really easy, you cant go wrong. Saying that, I already had the TV Module so not sure how big of a job fitting that is, although i imagine not hard. I got my screen working so I have the use of Satnav, but when I plugged my TV module in with the Aux input I have nothing, not even static, just a blank screen.
