No Reverse Lights,Tested,Still No Luck,Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, sorry for a bit of a boring subject,i have no reverse lights so this is what i have done so far.

Removed boot trim, checked bulbs/hoders all ok,checked for feed up to lamps,no feed!

Checked fuse in glovebox for reversing lights, fuse ok and feed comeing through both sides of fuse,is there only one fuse to be had??????????

Next stop, reverse switch-were is it????????is it by the gear gaitor?????Can i get to it from the top????and if i bridge the connector with a split pin will this tell me yes or no if the sensor i knackered like some cars or does it work of a switching earth type circuit???

Any help would be great as im not really looking forward to traceing wires if thats the problem. Many thanks in advance.

afaik its on the side of gearbox .if you bridge the wires it should put the lights on. or you could stick it in reverse and check continuity across the switch itself too.

got to get under though dude

Kind of sorted the problem,i missed the fuse,so replaced it and i had reversing lights..........for a full single reverse !!!!and it blew again!!

I noticed then that my reverse sensors worked again but only bleeped once!!

Tested the sensors and noticed only three were clicking, the one on the o/s wasn't,is this the cause of the fuse blowing????????

Not been around for a few months so missed this one as had the same sort of problem with my reversing lights, done all of the above checks and still no luck, ended up finding out the fault following many hours of scratching my head, it ended up being a couple of broken wires in the loom that comes from the car into the boot lid, where the boot lid opens and closes so much it ends up damaging the wires, after pulling the rubber back to get access and stripping the wires I re-connected them with solder and wrapped in insulation tape and fixing a few of the others that where there and looking in need of some TLC I checked the end result and all lights ended up working again, maybe this is also the problems with yours?

Hope this Helped :)

Many thanks for the help so far,ok hit this problem today and still no luck!!

This is what i did,Removed boot wireing sheath to check for cut wires, all in good condition

Disconnected rear reverse lamps, still blew fuses.

Removed the rear bumper, checked rear sensors, think the rear right is buggered so disconnected all sensors, still blew fuses.

Disconnected sensors from the control box on the o/s of boot, still blew fuse.

Im really struggling now, were can i go next??or what tests can i do,i havent disconnected the reverse sensor yet and check if it still blows the fuse, could the switch itself cause a short???

It started off as the rear sensors bleeping continiously, then lost my rear reverse lights, when replacing fuse it did last one or two reverses, now it blows as soon as it hits the reverse gate.Any ideas would be much appriciated,Thanks

if it was me id put the bulbs in the reverse lights. remove the wiring from the switch and turn on the ign. see what happens.if it blows you have a wiring short.

then bridge the switch with a decent piece of wire. turn on the ign see what happens. if they work ok, the switch is faulty.

Hopefully i think ive sorted it!!notice there is a crack in the switch(don't have a clue how)but it weeping fluid down into the connector!!you bridge it works ok,works for maybe the first time its connected to the switch then blows pretty much straight away, fuse doesnt blow at all when bridged!so ordered one from BMW today for a bargain 6 quid!!

Next problem i have is now im getting things to work, does anybody know were i can get a o/s/r parking sensor as this is also faulty??seen a few on ebay which are second hand and cant help wondering why they are second hand, they are 110 pounds painted or 70 unpainted which i think is way to expensive,

Anybody be able to guide me to someone to buy them cheaper??

Thanks again

It could also be the relay which lives in the engine bay on the passenger side just under the windscreen valance, there is a black box secured with 4 or 5 torx head screws open it up and the reverse relay is the dark blue one near the front right of the box. A quick search on youtube will show you how to test the relay.
