Fixing faulty window switches (DIY)

Recommended Posts

Mod: I tried posting this in DIY but it didn't appear, is there a confirmation process? If I somehow fubared posting, can you move this into the guides?

If you find your window(s) are playing silly buggers when you try to open/close them, it's quite possible that it's due to a very small rubber component below your switches.

My situation was that the window would not go up. I held down the lock key on my key fob, which closed the window, thus the mechanism was fine.

Here's a very simple guide how to remove the gear surround, window switches and the possible culprit.

Tools needed: Phillips & Flat Head Screwdriver (the one in your boot is fine)

Firstly, remove the gaiter: Simply squeeze it and it'll lift out.

Then you'll need to remove the 2x Phillips screws (I've removed them at this point)

A poor picture, but the switch unit is simply held in by a squeeze clip. Where my thumb is, give it a bit of pressure and out it pops

You'll also need to disconnect the wire, again, simply squeeze it

Then you should have this

Flat head to prize apart the clips holding the units together:

Then you have this...

The two plastic sliding bits should come off

Then you want to have a look at the culprit little grey rubber mounts. They have a slot to fit into. Mine had snapped where they compress.

Either: Swap them around (making your rear window useless) or find a spare from a scrappy, mate, eBay? I was lucky enough to find someone from here who had one going spare!

When re-assembling, place the plastic sliding components back on (they should fit neatly around the rubber mounts) and turn the HOUSING for this part upside down on a hard surface

Line up the two units and drop the inner unit into place whilst the housing is still on the hard surface. You can see from the picture above how the alignment should look. Lift the entire unit CAREFULLY and then squeeze the two units together so that it clicks into place. By doing it this way, the buttons will be perfectly aligned. If the housing is off the surface when you drop the inner unit in, the buttons will be too high and won't work. If you click it together when the housing is still on the floor, the buttons will be too low.

This is exactly how it should look before you click it together, note: button angles

Done. Reverse the process to reassemble, but remember that when putting the gear stick/button surround back in, slot the far end in first (nearest your radio), as there are clips underneath

Do the screws up tight, it needs to go through 3 threads remember.

I had the same problem and i fixed it by simply putting a very small o-ring around the contact and the gray rubber as a cushion so the contact springs back and its been working since. Also, I switched the rubber piece to the rear window because i use it less hopefully to prolong the quick fix. Hope this helps
