Danw8986
ok after fitting my read view camera i thought id do a quick DIY to help any one out who was thinking of doing this as i couldn't find much with a google search. it took me 2 days in total doing other things in-between but could probably be done in 6 hours solid things you will need: number plate camera http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110579096671&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_1719wt_907 electrical tape extra wire decent rotary tool 4x tiny screws silicone sealant wire crimps STAGE 1 - FITTING THE CAMERA INTO THE BOOTHANDLE 1. start by taking the boot handle off. there are 4x hex bolts on the underside of the handle once these are out give it a good tug as there are 2x pop pins ether side. 2. now remove the number plate cover and bulb from the side you want to mount the camera in 3. use the dremmel to cut out the bulb holder held in by 6 or 7 little plastic spot welds. once this is done extend the wires for later use. 4. trial fit the camera and if its a coupe like mine it wont fit so back out with the dremmel and make it fit. i sanded down the whole of the camera casing at the rear to its thinnest point and also the boot handle so it fitted perfect. 5. no dremmel channels for the wiring to sit in and lead up to the existing wiring. be carful not to cut any of the boot release electrics. now run the wiring out were the existing wiring is already placed then used some silicone adhesive to re-seal the unit just for good measure. 6. screw the camera into the correct position and handle is complete STAGE 2 - WIRING THE CAMERA UP theres 2 ways to do this. the easy way and the way i did it. the easy way: conect the light power to the existing number plate light wireing, the camera power to the reverse light bulb and the phono the the rear veiw input. my way : i wanted the camera to be accessible even when i wasn't reversing (so i can perv on any fittys driving behind me) 1. strip the boot lining off the boot lid, there will be about 10 expanding rivets and two carpeted screws to hold the tool kit in place . now pull thru your wiring. 2. run the wiring down the boot to the rubber tube from the boot lid to the boot space that houses the existing wiring. now the aim is to thread the wires thru this tube, as in other instances of trying to make cylindrical objects fit into tight spaces designed for something else i recommend lots off lube. you have to cut the phono lead for this to then re-attach once thru 3. once you have the wires threaded thru the rubber tube there is a little plastic pop out circle in the boot thread the wires down here and re attach youtr phono lead head. 4. now pass your phono lead and camera power lead up to the front of the cabin hiding the wires in the side trims, go up thru the glove box and to the rear of the head unit . 5. plug in your phono into the rear cam in slot (im using dynavin v5) and tap into the power leads for the head unit and crimp on your new power supply (on the dynavin v5 these are the black for earth and yellow for power) job done ! any steps ive missed out or your unsure of just ask Edited April 28, 2011 by Danw8986

zimzimmer46
Nice job u probably could get a tiny camera in the centre of the BMW badge. Something I wouldn't mind doing but not just yet.
RickyZ
not sure tbh if the origanal tv has a video input im preaty sure it can it can however if you wanted a DVD player you would need to split the 1 input into 2 as OEM has only 1 input IIRC

Cage
can it fit on a convertible? Yes it fits the convertible as I have one fitted to my car. The same principle applies when fitting in all E46s.
