1999 318i Oil Leak

Recommended Posts

Anyone been busy with their M43 lately?

Not much lately on the engine. I had an oil change at national and the little 4 pot is running very well. No noise on tickover and much less rattley on startup.

I have been more inclined to tinker in my shed than work on the car lately.....

yep still working away on the little 318. took it out for a bez around the bedfordshire countryside a few weeks ago but its off the road atm while i paint the wheels again.

one thing i do need to sort out are the tiny vacuum pipes that run around the MAF/intake manifold/egr valve area. They're only push fit but mine are all cracked and not falling off at times, clearly they're not mission critical but i'll wager BMW didn't put them there for a laugh. Need to machine up some bracket to hold my DIY air intake in place too at some point, oh and get it on a dyno to check numbers and AFR readings to make sure the 272 cam hasn't caused any lean running.

Hi. Very easy job, take the old ones off and the new ones just slip on no problem. Cheap from the Dealers.

Have you looked at the pipe from the fuel rail going under the manifold to the MAF, if dodgy replace that as well. Jim

Cheers i will go on real oem now and get the part numbers! They are so deeply cracked at the min  But i think they are fuel return so not under any pressure B)

Havent had a look at the pipe under the MAF will check :)

Thats good to hear what oil did they use? I've been using castrol edge 0w/30 fully synthetic for the last 2 services and that seems ok :)

Ooh new cam? Whats the expected gain?

I would be interested to know what the gain is with the uprated cam too B)

What a thread, i have a Mid 2001 built 318ci too with M43 motor with 76,000 on.

Ive had 2 repairs to the tranfser pipe on back of engine above bell housing by BMW warrenty, both times they've resealed the pipe and said it's fixed, 3/4/5 days later its hoying it back out, BMW techs havent a clue on how to fix and as i bought the warrenty i dont want to repair myself as it'll cost me. Awaiting call back so i can do it at my garage rather than BMW and the warrenty still pay.

I am in the process of checking, cleaning and replacing the hoses on the engine and the various sensors and fittings. Running 5w30 longlife oil and Gen oil filter aswell now, gets changed every 6 months aswell so the engine is pretty quiet and running sweet.

The only engine 'mods' I have are i have de-trumpet'd the airbox, going for a stainless centre and rear exhaust soon as mine is due a change before it actually gets holey.

They used Castrol Edge 5W40 Fully Synthetic. It was £47 all in with filter.

i like this thread! its like kinder garden where all the little 318's go! :D

this is my first little 4 pot bimmer ( had 328's in the past but because the new missus is only 19 the insurance starts going silly at anything higher)

its a sep 2001 bulit car with just about to turn 121k on the clock when it was bought last september, yesterday it cleared 133 (got a pic at 133333!)

and so far its been reasonably trouble free!

the only real niggle its got is it sounds like the exhaust is blowing, near the front somewhere, replaced the mount that goes to the gearbox and it quietened slightly, but ive been underneath and cant find anywhere thats got any evidence of any leaks, cant feel anything, no condensation on first strart up!

Does anybody elses sound slightly blowy, appaently its quite common on the 318's <_<

I have always had a niggling that my exhaust is blowing, but now after a proper oil change it sounds much better. Driving down a road with a wall, hearing the reflected sound still sounds nasty, but windows up you can hardly hear the engine or exhaust... Need to get under the car to look at the clutch delay valve delete and give the exhaust a go over. Im sure a new exhaust isnt too expensive, and its low on the priority list right now.

same here, the reflected sound is nasty but windows up and normal roads its fine, had a noisy tappet on cold starts when i first got mine, did an oil change and it was slightly better, then when the aberdeen - leeds - back to aberdeen trips started that cleared.

cdv is geting dumped aswell, as soon as ive got the time!

Ooh new cam? Whats the expected gain?

The expected gain was 10 - 15 bhp at peak but that doesnt really paint the full picture, its more about how/where the power is developed. I cant remember the exact standard figures but essentially the standard engine makes you feel like you should change up a gear at peak torque which is about 3800rpm. The new cam has eliminated this, it pulls all the way to the red line, so while peak output may only be up a bit its the difference at other points in the curve, most important between the old peak torque and the redline area of the rev range, my butt dyno suggests the gains here will be substantial. Only noticeable downside is on pull away, it feels like the clutch is going home (which wont be long on mine anyway) but i suspects its the trade off in power that just means you need to rev it a bit more. I did write a first impression bit on my superlight build thread in the photos section. The plan is to get it dyno before i go any further with it but as always in life its a question of finding the time.

Whats the internal diameter of the pipe that goes from the fuel pressure valve at end of fuel rail. The little vacuum pipes, i need some and just going to replace with some coloured silicon hose form EBAY or somewhere, just save me going out to measure and that if some-one knows it off the top of there head, 6mm close ?

Jim. I feel bad. You have helped me out all the way.. Now I cant offer you any...

Any codes?

I'm still waiting for a chance to fit my drop links. Hoping to get rid of that clunk once and for all. Hoping its not the wishbones. they were changed 10K ago, but before I bought it, so I don't know what type. Hoping to check the manufacturers stamp when im fitting the drop links.

Other that that she's going well.

Drop links in, clunk gone... half expecting it to return though.

Couldn't see manufacturers stamp on wishbones. So no peace of mind there...

Hi. Might have to keerp it, just spent a few pounds on MOT. 2 rear springs and an o/s wishbone. Not sure on how to check if ICV is faulty. Jim

You can clean it sometimes that improves it. It's on the throttle body held on with 2 screws :)

If i remember right its on the top front of the intake. I cleaned mine, but it turned out to be the CCV.

Would the ICV have an effect when cold? Like an old school choke?
