Reason I've joined this forum is because I've had a fault on my 318ti N42 that's very similar too this thread. When I was trying to diagnose the fault I had a quick google around to see if I could find anyone that had fixed it. After reading through several different threads I found that nobody had really pin pointed a fix and that they were changing everything like, coil packs, plugs, cam sensors, crank sensors etc. The fault with my car was poor performance under 2k rpm, when I drove it under load like out of roundabouts in 3rd the car would judder/ misfires. I also had a very minor oil leak. The leak look like it was coming from the brake vacuum pump, so i decided to fix that as I know that the engine can be very tempermentol when it has a vacuum leak, so I thought maybe it could be. Anyway I know that a new pump is super expensive, but you can buy just the O rings of ebay. So I replaced the O ring that's in the pump and the O ring that's seals the pump to the cylinder head. I fitted it all back up, not a big job at all (£10). Road tested and the car was fixed! The leak had stopped, the car runs upper smooth, no juddering or misfiring and it quicker! The leak must of been so gradual that my driving style just excepted it until the leak got so bad I had to do somthing. Also with the guy that thinks he has a cam spring broken, I have also had a rattle from my engine. I changed my chain tensioner, no fix, I took it to several dealers and indys, and with quotes well over 3k to fully overall the chain, and vanos and cams etc i decided to take action myself. I'm a technician myself so I believe it was a vano, so I bought second hand ones and replaced one at a time starting with the exhaust vano. Smudger1979 Posted July 27, 2013 Report Share Posted July 27, 2013 Hi, Anyone having trouble with the engine really rattling it may well be your Vanos Exhuast cog like Mickey KC says above. I have taken mine to a couple of garages and they have changed things like the chanin tensioner, but then took it to an indy who knows what he is on about. My engine now sounds pretty sweet and not like a diesel tractor. Not a cheap job though, new part £210 and labour £250 so ended up being £550 with VAT but definitely worth doing if you are embarassed about the noise. My guy said it is quite hard to diagnose and lots of parts have to be taken off to get to it. Showed me the cog and there did not look like there was anything wrong with it but that is because the noise is generated by an internal problem on the cog. I too have a hesitancy, judder between 1700 and 2000 revs. Not really sure what it is but I am going to replace my MAF sensor and fuel filter and go from there.
