Matt_S
How did you fit the m3 rear arb? Thought they were a diff shape to the coupes? He's got the M3 rear end on his car

Blair
Blair - did you do the bushes yourself? Which ones are the easiest to fit? Yeah none of them were rocket science but I had a workshop & press...
mit
Eibach + M3 ARBs. You might also have the usual bush related problems, in which case get new wishbones.
Matt_330CI
Mit, what problems are those? Is there a design floor on the wishbones?
Matt_330CI
http://www.e46fanatics.com/features/feature.php?news_id=40 http://store.bimmerworld.com/powerflex-e46-3-seriesz4-control-arm-bushing-p281.aspx Interesting - I would say mine feels a little vague up front lately and at the last MOT he mentioned something about the control arm. Is this what you mean Mit and why would replacing the wishbone help?
johnny330i
IIRC the balljoints fail on the wishbones (one of mine has) and they cant be replaced (seems odd to me). However a new set of lower arms wont break the bank and you can do the LCAB at the same time Edited December 7, 2011 by Johnny320d
Matt_330CI
It'd probably need a geometry set up after all that wouldnt it?
Dr T
Im pretty happy with the way mine handleson the road. Done: H&R front anti roll bar Front Strut brace Poly bushed EVERY possible bush HSD springs & shocks 20mm wheel spacers all round M3 convertable rear anti roll bar 2 deg Neg camber front 1.5 deg Neg camber rear Ride height the same all round 560mm I too have the HSD kit on mine and rate it very highly, i did put up a short write up about it on here ages ago when i had it done... http://www.e46zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17297 I think the HSD set up is more compliant over rough ground than my S-line audi if that's any use as a guide. (why is the search function so awful on here, i search for HSD coilover and in the six pages of result the thread i wanted which is titled HSD coilover suspension review doesn't come up. google it and its the first link!, no wonder we have so many repeated threads) Mark - I can't believe you'd do all that suspension work and then put tyres that dont fit on! I wont be trying it, but I reckon simply shedding about 400kg's of weight from an E46 would make it handle delightfully. How you'd do that I have no idea though lol. Interesting point you raise about staggered tyre sizes. IMO BMW put them on to stop people over steering through the nearest bush more than any other reason. as for dropping 400kgs, i'm still a long way off that and I don't think i have a shred of 'premium' left. But it does handle very well. http://www.e46zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=31220

Mines down as 1,650 on my log book! just doubled checked it and it's correct (1360kg dripping wet), to save me hijacking this thread i've answered in full back on my one. Matt_330CI
I dunno if it is hijacking as weight saving is a very very good way of improving handling and performance. Just to throw this one out there IIRC, a 318 is what, 140bhp? Get that down to 1200 kg's and your power to weight is 116bhp per ton A 330ci is 1650kg @ 230bhp = 139bhp per ton - not that far off! Add in the fact the lighter 318 with a smaller lighter engine at the front will handle better, I wouldnt fancy the 330's chances on a tight track race... Phantom Mark
My 330i Sport (before any stripping) was 1550kg on the local builders weigh bridge, thats 150bhp per ton near as makes any difference..........cant see a coupe being 100kg heavier ? johnny330i
My 320d must be low on powers then ... 136bhp/1.45Ton = 93.79 bhp/ton

Mark, when you weighed your 330i I assume you weren't in it? and any idea how much fuel was in it?

Phantom Mark
Yup, the vert is heavier, more strengthening to accomodate the roof being lopped off eh

Phantom Mark
My 320d must be low on powers then ... 136bhp/1.45Ton = 93.79 bhp/ton Dunno why you dont get a remap, mine flew once I had it remapped, on default map it was slow as sin.........mine ran around 165/175bhp and 310nm of torque, went very well indeed, was still good on fuel as well. Dr T
1560kh Full tank with me in it, just reading my notes now on my phone (tracking the weight loss carefully for future reference) ,I weigh 72kg, after stripping out the rear went down to 1477kg, thats basically boot trims, rear seats, door cards, side airbags, cd changer etc. so without you and the fuel your car started at about 1460kg. I wish i'd weighed mine now to start with. after the strip out (similar to your level by the sound of it) i'm down to 1260kg without me or much fuel, so adding that in i'm back to the book value at 1360kg which makes no sense. There's no reason for the weighbridge to overread is there (unless its to ensure the trucks are definately below the legal limit I guess 100kg isn't alot in the truck world, I used the local council weighbridge at the tip). But if my car weighed 1360kg by the book, i take myself and the fuel out, thats 1260kg, then 100kg of interior and i should be at 1160kg. Even adding on some options (which i don't think i have except air con), say 40kg worth to make 1200kg total, i'm still 60kg above that according to the weighbridge. Once i sort out some replacement seats i'll get it weighed again (both at the tip and somewhere else to be sure). Have you removed the sound deadening stuff, i'm yet to try that, did you use any heat or cold or just attack it with a scrapper?
Phantom Mark
nah the serious weight loss starts when I finally sell the sport leather.........then the scraper comes out and removing all that horrible sound deadening, fwiw my local is a small builders merchant, deducting my weight would see the std car at 1490kg and 1402kg respectively, I am aiming for 1200kg realistically and 1150kg hopefully (optimistic maybe), but thats with the heavier S54 motor fitted., your four pot could well come in less no doubt. I will also try another place to compare the weights........VOSA station nearby might humour me ? Edited December 7, 2011 by Phantom Mark
Dr T
i guess thats the thing, my car is a base model so taking out interior doesn't save much as its all cheap and light whereas for you taking out a leather rear seat will save more. at the end we will both be left with the big bits of metal that make up the car which will be the same for us both. I doing a few bits and bobs with the engine at the moment but hopefully before the spring i can get the next stage of weight loss in which'll be lighter front seats, lightweight battery and remove the spare and jack, that should put me at 1200kg without me and 1/4 tank of fuel. if i ever have the spare cash to throw at poly windows and plastic boot and bonnet 1150 might be doable. yours is going to fly round the track with that weight and engine combo.
