Proffitt
I have the 320d and I find its got plenty of power for overtaking, quick car for a 2.0l Diesel imo Although, my gf's brother has a e92 (i think) 3.0l saloon and that thing shifts!! When you get going, it just keeps on going. Ha If you can stretch for a 330 then get one but don't think the 320 will be slow, especially with a map

CNL Remapping
I would have a 330cd any day of the week, they are soo much smoother than the 320d, more responsive, they are quicker & more fun to drive. 320d's are brilliant don't get me wrong, I'm glad i chose the 330cd when I did, mind you I have now sold it after 5 yrs of ownership & own a VW Scfirocco 2.0gt tdi lol There are around 10mpg difference between the 2 engines, if you need mpg get a 320d, if not 3.0d gets my vote ! Im not finding that! The 330 gets more mpg and easier, you dont have to make a point of driving slow in the 300 to get mpg unlike the 320. In the 330 you can just woft on a a huge ammount of torque but the 320 you have to push that little bit harder to get it going and you have to saty on the gas for longer. My remapped 320 on an combined journy does 45 ish and the 330 on the same journey

You expect a 320d to be as fast as a 330d but it isn't so you end up driving it harder to compensate (which you don't need to do).

Nope nothign to do with that eiether, your right in what you saying but not with a remapped 320d it doesnt need pushing to get it going. What im saying is that my 330 is better on fuel than my 320d
spence_star
So from what i have read so far, is that the 330 is more economical than the 320 in terms of mpg, is that due to the power to weight ratio? If thats the case i may as well go for the 330? Why would i buy a smaller engine if i get more power and more mpg out of a bigger engine? I guess the bigger engine handles the weight of the vehicle much better. I am still deciding on a 320d and a 330d touring, but i was just on the topic "Buyers Guide" which kinda put me off the E46 altogther. Seems like there are a lot of problems that could arise if not already.
Longun
I don't think we can say fro sure the 330 is better. Too many variables with our different driving styles, ages of cars, some are mapped etc. This can't be taken into account for us to come to a valid conclusion. I doubt BMW would build a 330 that was better on fuel with the same driving syles on equally new cars I suspect in equal tests the 320 would be better on fuel but I doubt it would be by much. Get the 330 for more power, more drivabiliy and the fact it's not really any more expensive to run. E46 has a few issues but most can be sorted cheaply, swirl flaps for example but every car has its issues.
dannyboy759
Take what im saying with a pinch of salt! Like longun says a 330 wont always be better on fuel than a 320 and nor should it. But im finding because my 330 is 285bhp and 570NM you dont need to use as much throttle or as long to get up to normal speeds under normal driving. On the other hand if you were to push both then ofcourse the 320 would be better than the 330 but not as much fun. ive got to the point now where im thinking of changing my 320d sprt for another 330 as the car is so great and no where near as bad on fuel as i intially thought. If you can live with the extra tax and the extra insurance then id go for a 300 any day
beema
What are uou likely to pay on tax on the 320d & 330d? I currently have a 325se. What difference in maintenance/running costs would there be with my car and the 320/330d's? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
dannyboy759
I think off the top of my head that the tax for the 330 is just over £200 and the 320 is about £170 i suspect yours is even more than the 330? As for running costs theres not really a lot in it to be honest but it depends on what sort of miles you are doing daily and where you drive? If you are doing short journeys then a 330 isnt the right car as diesels dont tend to be too hot around town but if you doing a few hundred miles a week on the motorway then a diesel would suit. Ive always found the 325 to be the poor realation in the respect that they arent as quick as a 330i but they use as much fuel! But as for a 320 or 330, i like them both remembering that both mine are remapped and to be fair the 330 is a lot better on fuel with the modified map than it was standard. I do about 100 miles a day combined driving and im getting between 48-49 mpg which is pretty good. If it was me and you could find a decent one id have a 330 but both 320d's and 330d sports are quite sort after and finding a good un is a bit of a struggle unless you got a decent budget. kennedyuk2001
Yeah been looking about for one, went to see a 320d remapped but turbo is noisy, whinning really badly, cracking price, but didnt want to commit to a car that most likely imo will need a new turbo.. Was also contemplating whether a re-map would be the best option for me to get a bit more economy or if there would be no point. kal187
Its all about 330d. My mate has a 320d and its ok but certainly lacks in oomph! Apparently they are more prone to swirl flap problems. My 330cd vert did from here to the swiss alps on one tank. Thats 530 miles of french dual and single carriageways. I had to fill up before going through the alps as the roads are amazing!! 3rd gear is awesome. With the TC off the back was kicking out all over the place even with brand new Michelins on. V-power diesel sets me back £90 per tank. Unfortunately the time has come for a new Dual Mass flywheel and new brakes and unfortunately they are not cheap whan they go wrong, but thats the case with any BMW you buy. Best of luck with your search. Kal
