j1mmys
Hi, Ive just noticed my front speakers have stopped working. As far as I can make out the tweeters in each door (convertible) arent working at all and the mid range speakers in the bottom of the doors are very muffled deep sound only?? I checked the fuses can't seem to find any fuses relating to speakers any idea's anyone? Thanks
j1mmys
If it could be related in any way if recently re-wired the front drivers side door tweeters back in as the connector was broke. Didnt have any diagram on pin outs so just tested until sound seemed ok. Although i cant see this causing it??
mit
The tweeters and midrange are at the top and the woofers are at the bottom. You sure it's not just your fader setting on the head unit? Not sure what you mean about rewiring the driver side door tweeters. Singh
Do you have the standard audio, or the HK? Any of the amp components could be playing up and causing this.
mit
Aah yeah good shout Singh, the HK amp is known to fail in that way...
j1mmys
Its HK, defo not a fader setting.
Rob-
Dry joints in the amp are probably the cause. Might be worth having a go at fixing it yourself. I'm sure there's a guide out there in internet land

j1mmys
Where is the amp in the car?
mit
In your car it's behind the trim panel next to the back seat on the passenger side. You have to take the rear seat and trim panel out to get to it. Edited October 12, 2012 by mit
j1mmys
Ok ill give it a go. However if its knackered i dont think a straight swap would be viable at 150 (going rate on ebay). Id get a new headunit, i know my new head unit would have an amp in but im assuming it wouldnt work? hmmm. Or could i replace the amp with another brand say kenwood? Solder the connections in? j1mmys
Right ok took the BM54 out and the amplifier, On the boards there is some strange looking glue-y stuff that ive not seen on a circuit before. But im no expert. What the hell is it? Blown component? BM54 Edited October 14, 2012 by j1mmys
ian332isport
What the hell is it? Blown component? Looks like a blob of hot melt glue. Quite common on circuit boards to stop things moving. Saying that, I would not expect a blob that size in that location. It's certainly not a blown component though. Cheers, Ian. j1mmys
Well put back together and now doesnt work at all. In reality I dont know whether the fault is on the BM54 or the HK Amplifiier. By the sounds of what ive read both are junk. Priced repair/replacement talking about £200 for both. Seems a bit daft spending that much to replace with new unreliable stuff?? Ideally it would be best to throw the lot out and build my own hi-fi? Not quite sure what to do hmm? deepak
Its funny you mention this. I have exactly the same problem, but I have the standard BMW Business CD unit, therefore no HK amp. Edited October 15, 2012 by deepak

Mike k
This is interesting reading because i recently noticed im getting limited sound from my drivers side front speakers. I wondered if its a loose connection in the door but knowing my superb luck it'll be something more. Incidently, my car has harmon kardon. Bit of a silly place for them to put the amp in what is basically in the passenger rear wing, surely it gets freezing cold and maybe a little damp being in there. Why not in the boot somewhere.
