Cosmic2011
It's really not worth chucking any money out to try and repair a six pot once the headgasket has gone. I learnt that the hard way on my old 323. Scrap it or chuck another engine in it. Bad luck mate, I know how you feel Are the 6 pot petrols that bad when the head gasket goes? Nothing a good skim and a new gasket won't sort?

Nothing a good skim and a new gasket won't sort? I skimmed the head, spent a fortune on an OEM complete gasket set, new head bolts etc. Put it all back together and when I torqued up the head bolts they pulled the threads straight out of the block. I put heli coils in and tried again but they were no good either, I also think the mating surface on the block was warped too. Once the alloy block has had some heat in it there is a good chance it's f**ked!

The six pot petrol block is a fantastic lump if the cooling system is kept 100%, I ignored the coolant light at my peril (what a numpty, I know). But if it overheats there isn't much alloy between the piston liners and as its alloy and not a harder/heavier metal you are effectively heat treating it. Cosmic2011
That's not good! I bumped into my friend on xmas eve in his E36 323 cab at tesco petrol station with a whole heap of steam coming out the radiator and it took 8 ltrs of water! So Is that alloy block/head? B0B
Yes it will be the same engine as Bens. The cooling system only takes 8 litres from empty too
touringking
Merry Christmas a Ben, unlucky mate because it was starting to take shape, and would of looked sweet when done. What's your plans then? Swap all your trick bits over to another, or just break and move on??

benwalsh91
So after many umming and arring. I decided to just fix it. The Mrs would kill me if I bought another car so I just sucked it up and got it done. I really like the car and if I get it done I have peace and mind over what I've had done to the car. I could go and get another and have the same issue. The guy I take my car to us a bmw specialist. He has done the work on all my cats and families cars so we sat down and had a good chat about what to do. So back on track. And then on my way home I ripped my bumper off and pushed it along the road for about 300 yards. Lost a fog lights surround. Smashed a fog and destroyed my bumper to bits. Just shrugged it off. Bought a new bumper just waiting delivery and then I will put it into paint with my rear bumper. Looking for M side skirts, roof spoiler and csl boot. Full boot not just the stick on spoiler shafz

benwalsh91
Shame - but surely cheaper and better to get a 328 lump chucked in? i also thought this but i couldnt find a 328 within a decent distance of myself with the only car i have the use of being my e36 which i wouldnt want to put an engine in the back of or a fiat 500 which an engine wont fit in the back of lol. there wasnt anything with decent millage or anything that i trusted that had any history with so decided to just repair what i had really as i wanted it done as soon as possible rather than having to wait for an engine to come up at a decent price and then arrange to get it picked up etc etc would have been to much of a ballache. Gutting it will come along, trying to get love for this car again so i think i am going to take it to worthersee this year with my lot. Good choice saving the car! Shame to keep scraping them! How did your bumper manage to come off? yeah i didnt want to scrap her i think if i was to get rid i would just hand the keys over to someone and let them fix it rather than scrap it and get F-ALL money. i hit a slight bump in the road and i snapped the brackets and clips, i dont think it was fitted correctly to start with. i got a brand new bumper on the way going to do some smoothing on it before i fit it though. Fairplay ben cheers man, just going to start gathering some parts again soon and try and fall back in love with it, like mentioned above i am arranging to do worthersee in this thing so lets hope it stays together for the trip!!! Get the wheels on Ben, that will revive your love it. yeah will be going with the Rollhard lot, we all went last year. was really good. if i go i will take this with me i would have thought. take a bmw to a VAG show just to wind some people up. yeah want to get the wheels on but still need to order adaptors i am just dragging my feet after the expenses ive paid out on this. going to get new years out the way and then start spending again. dont know how expensive that night is going to be! ive got a few bits and bobs on the way for this but i wont be fitting the wheels till spring anyway. i may be tempted to go to heaven on wheels in belgium in March so will like to have the wheels on for then. benwalsh91
Little bit wound up. Got home from work yesterday and I saw my bumper out of line in the corner and my wing mirror looked odd. Go over to the car to see someone has driven into it. Bumper ripped off on one side. Wing mirror cracked and broken and front wing folded over and all marked up. Could be worse but such a inconvenience and pissed me off people just don't give a f**k these days about other people's property.

benwalsh91
got no idea, i live on a really quiet road which is a dead end so we get no through traffic so it would have had to be either a neighbour or someone visiting one of the neighbours. i have a front bumper and a rear bumper due to go into paint so i will get the wing done with that, i may do a bit of smoothing on it as its going into paint anyway (and obviously do the same to the other side) a few more bits to add to the never ending "to do list" just more things to rush in before worthersee in May, with both the front wings potentially getting painted and the front and rear bumper i may just chuck the bonnet in to get painted too and get rid of a couple of stone chips so atleast then its all nice and fresh. its just one of those things that getting annoyed about is not going to solve anything so just trying to shrug it off. partly my fault for leaving it in the road but on the other hand people should be more careful. i live opposite a coldersac (however you spell it) so my guess is someone has hit it reversing out of there. annoying thing is my dogs usually bark if someone comes close the the drive or our cars but they wasnt, obviously they felt like they where "off duty" or having a break. stupid mutts. got a few little bits and bobs i am after if anyone can help... US front amber bumper reflectors. e46 M3 amber side repeaters facelift rear boot lights (to go with my led rears) - just to confirm the facelift lights should still fit into my boot? its just the saloon and cab ones that are differant. going to start fibreglassing the rear bumper soon and repearing that and smoothing some bits out of it and when my new bumper turns up i will smooth a few bits on there which i have plan to then send into paint. also waiting on bits to get the wheels built and aim to get them on the car for Spring. benwalsh91
Well I wanted to try something a little different. So got a front bumper that I am going to do some stuff with My free rear bumper. Got a diffuser for it for £40. Happy days! Needs a tiny repair and paint Also when fitted going to get a custom exhaust done for it And took her for a drive for the first time since before Christmas. Was quite nice have a couple of photos Some of you may see I've added QR bumper mounts. This is all that is holding the bumper on due to the car being low and needing to remove it quite regular lol. Also I want some flex as I would rather the band on the QR mount snap over the bumper Also a cheeky present from Texas
