Rough idling from cold 330CI

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Myself and my local BMW Indie garage are pulling our hair out and hoping someone can help on here which would be very much appreciated?

i have a 330Ci with 170k miles on clock. Engine reconditioned about 5k miles ago and all was well. The EML came on recently so booked into indie garage with a good rep to resolve. Diagnostics showed various faults which pointed to the O2 sensors and probable VANOS fail. The sensors were changed and a recon VANOS unit fitted. Fault was cleared briefly but then came back with same fault codes (which I can't remember off hand).

Symptons are very rough idling from cold (after 8 hours left standing). Revs flutter from 500 - 1300 RPMs for a few minutes then return to normal if left but if driven straight away no power and kangaroos up the road. After a few minutes it returns to near normal although power is still down. EML light remains on constantly.

CCV was changed about a year ago, MAF removed and car run, cleaned etc, CAM sensor also changed by main dealer.

There is a small oil leak from the VANOS gasket which is next to be sorted but I don't think this would cause the problems?

I suggested an air leak in intake hose etc but garage said this wouldn't throw up the codes given and wouldn't explain the roughness from cold getting better when warmed up!

anyone else experienced these problems or any ideas (garage haven't charged me for second VANOS change so not having me over).

Thanks for reading and would greatly appreciate any thoughts.

Did you check the intake hoses for splits? An air leak at intake would very much throw an EML light and theyre sometimes difficult to spot unless you completely remove them and check them over.

While theyre out, whip your idle control valve out as well and give it a clean as grit can sometimes cause problems with the valve mechanism.
